Dartmouth Scores First Eight, Tops Columbia

NEW YORK -- The No. 18 Dartmouth lacrosse team
took a 9-1 lead into halftime, and despite a strong second half
effort by Columbia,the deficit was too big for the Lions to
overcome as the Big Green went on to defeat Columbia 15-7 on
Saturday, March 26.
Draw controls proved to be pivotal in the first half, as Dartmouth
held an 8-3 advantage to maintain a majority of the possession in
the first 30 minutes of play. The Big Green jumped out to an
8-0 lead before Gabrielle Geronimos got the Lions on the board with
a free position goal with 9:18 to go in the half.
Dartmouth's Kat Collins scored back-to-back goals to start off the
second half, but once again it was Geronimos who scored a free
position goal at 22:43 to end Dartmouth's run and jump start a
five-goal Columbia run.
While the visiting team dominated the circle in the first half, it
was Columbia that won 10 of the 13 in the second half.
First-year Paige Cuscovitch scored a free position goal 1:23 after
Geronimos, before Kacie Johnson scored three straight to cut
Dartmouth's lead to five. Johnson's second goal came off a
pass from Cuscovitch where she buried it to the top right
corner. She followed that with a crease roll, and snuck one
past Kriste Giovanniello from a low angle to make it 11-6 with
13:31 to play.
The Big Green scored a pair of goals at 13:16 and 10:49 to push
their lead to 13-6 over the next three minutes.
Melissa Peterson scored off a fast-break to make it 13-7 with eight
minutes to play, but Dartmouth tacked on two more goal and kept
possession of the ball as time ran out for Columbia.
Flannery Gallagher and Mollie Andreae each picked up two caused
turnovers on defense, while Kelly Buechel won a team-high three
draw controls. Karlee Blank and Giovanniello each finished with
eight saves in goal.
Columbia (1-5, 0-3 Ivy) returns to action on Wednesday, March 30
when it hosts American at 2 p.m.
