American Pours in 20 Goals in Win over Bucknell

from press release

WASHINGTON -- The American University lacrosse team scored early and often Saturday en route to a 20-11 win over Bucknell Saturday at Jacobs Field.

Samantha Marshall scored her first of four goals on the afternoon just 30 seconds into the game to start the scoring for American (5-4, 2-1).  A 6-0 run for the Eagles widened the lead to 7-1 over the next ten minutes, providing American all the cushion they would need.  A Bucknell (2-9, 0-3) goal with 14:16 left in the first would bring the score back to 7-2 until Paige Lin scored twice in a 72 second span to complete her first-half hat trick and extend American's lead back to 9-2.

American followed a 3-0 run by Bucknell with three goals in the final two minutes of the half to increase its lead to 13-6 at the intermission.  Marshall capped the first-half scoring with her third tally of the stanza with just two seconds remaining on the clock.  American's 13 goals set a new season-high for first half goals, eclipsing the eight goals the Eagles took into the half against both Richmond and Virginia Tech.

The teams traded goals to start the second half with Emily Burton and Bernadette Maher providing the early offense for American.  Katelyn Miller pulled Bucknell to within 15-8 with 18:44 left before American used a 5-0 run to put the game away.  Lin scored her fourth goal of the day to start the stretch and was followed by back-to-back scores from Lauren Schoenberger.  Marshall then garnered her fourth and final tally of the game, pushing her team-leading haul to 19 for the season.  Emily Stankiewicz capped the scoring for American with her second of the day to increase the lead to 20-8.

The 20 goal effort was the Eagles best offensive output of the season and the first time American has reached the 20 goal plateau since a 20-9 win over Longwood at Jacobs Field on April 18, 2007.  Lin led the Eagles with five points on the afternoon, chipping in an assist to go with her four goals.  Kimberly Collins led the team with two helpers and added one goal.

Kaska Komosinski recorded four saves in 51 minutes of action in goal.  Marshall and Stankiewicz led the team with three ground balls; while Lin and Lisa Schaaf each won four draw controls for the Eagles.

American returns to action Wednesday, March 30 when the Eagles travel to New York to take on the Columbia Lions.  Gametime is set for 2:00 p.m.
