Clark, Garces Spark Wagner Past Long Island

from press release

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.
– Junior midfielders Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and Melanie Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) tallied four goals apiece to lead Wagner to a 13-7 victory over LIU in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams at cold and wind-swept Wagner College Stadium.

With the victory, the Seahawks break a four-game slide and improve to 2-6 on the season while the Blackbirds fall to 0-7.

For most of the contest this was a nip-and-tuck affair as the Seahawks led by a scant 4-3 margin at halftime. After Wagner built a seemingly comfortable 8-3 lead second-half lead, LIU pulled to within 8-7 with 10 minutes left before the Seahawks put the game away with a 5-0 run to win going away.

Goals by junior midfielder Lauren Petrik (Baldwinsville, NY/ Baldwinsville) and Garces staked Wagner to an early 2-0 lead. Following an LIU tally, Garces, on a free position shot, and Clark, off a feed from Petrik, scored to put the Seahawks on top 4-1. LIU would close the half with consecutive goals by Annie Kalata and Katie Williams to make it a 4-3 game at intermission.

The Seahawks came out blazing in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals to go up by an 8-3 count. Clark scored two of the goals during the run while Garces and sophomore attack Annie O'Connor (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) notched tallies as well. Clark's unassisted goal capped the flurry at the 19:09 mark. The Blackbirds responded with four consecutive goals of their own, the last one an unassisted tally by Kalata that made it 8-7 with 10:17 remaining in the game.

The Seahawks then steadied the ship when freshman attack Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/South Side) rifled home a goal off a pretty feed from Petrik that gave Wagner some breathing room at 9-7 with 9:25 left. Garces and Clark then scored on free position shots to make it 11-7. Freshman attack Leea Sinay (Marcellus, NY/ Marcellus) made it 12-7 game at the 3:05 mark after receiving a feed from Petrik. With 17 seconds left in the game, O'Connor capped the day's scoring with an unassisted goal to fashion the final score of 13-7.

Garces was the team leader in points with five as she added one assist to her four-goal outing. Petrik also recorded five points on the strength of one goal and a career-high four assists. Clark's four goals gave her four points while O'Connor added three points on two goals and one assist. Senior Carly Lyster (Oakhurst, NJ/ Ocean Township) was active on the defensive end, scooping up a team-high five groundballs while causing two turnovers.

Caitlin Farrell, Williams and Kalata had two goals apiece to pace the Blackbirds while Sara LaNoir chipped in with one goal. All seven LIU goals were unassisted.
In goal, freshman Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) had nine saves in recording the first win of her short career and now has a 1-3 record on the season. For the Blackbirds, Jacquelin Simonian came up with seven saves in goal.

Wagner out-shot LIU 17-16, led in groundballs 17-16 while holding a 15-7 margin in draw controls. On free-position shots, Wagner was 3-of-6 while the Blackbirds were 1-of-6.
