Gavin, Paton Keep Unbeaten Loyola Rolling

CATONSVILLE, Md. -- The No. 6 Loyola University women's lacrosse team kept rolling Wednesday night with a 15-8 victory at UMBC as senior Grace Gavin and freshman Marlee Paton scored four goals each to pace the Greyhounds to their seventh straight win to open the season.

The Greyhounds matched their season-high with the 15 goals and Gavin added three assists for seven points on the night while Paton added two assists to collect five points.

During the contest, senior captain Abby Rehfuss scored the 100th tally of her career, knocking in a free-position shot 18:49 remaining in the game. She is the 21st Greyhounds player in history to reach the century mark in goals. Her second goal of the contest capped the Loyola scoring when she scored unassisted with 69 seconds in the game.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the game as freshman Taryn VanThof opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 8:18 of play. She would finish with three goals in the game. After the Retrievers (6-3) pulled within one, Paton sandwiched scores around a goal by Gavin to put Loyola ahead by four goals with 8:43 left in the first half.

UMBC sandwiched single goals around tallies by Gavin and then Paton with each assisting on the other's goal to make the halftime score 7-3 in favor of the Greyhounds.

Loyola scored the first three goals of the second half behind a pair of scores by Gavin after another tally for Paton to build a seven-goal advantage at 10-3 with 26:37 remaining.

But the Retrievers scored the next three goals to make the score 10-6 and it would be as close as UMBC would get.as three different Loyola scorers increased the advantage to seven goals with 17:49 to play.

Loyola reached double-figure goals for the seventh time this season and got additional scores from seniors Caroline Hager and Meg Decker. Junior Kerry Stoothoff was credited with 11 saves to collect her sixth victory on the season.

UMBC was led in scoring by Amanda Pappas, who finished with four goals and an assist, and Ashley Stodter, who tallied three goals.

The Greyhounds return to action on Sunday when they host Denver at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Game time for the final non-conference contest of the season is noon.
