UMBC Beats Mount, Best Start Since '94

EMMITSBURG, Md. — Senior midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and junior attack Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) tallied six points piece to lead the UMBC women’s lacrosse team (6-2) to its third straight victory, a 15-8 win over in-state rival Mount St. Mary’s (1-6) Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium.
The Mount scored the first two goals of the game, but Coady ignited a 7-0 UMBC run that lasted more than 11 minutes with an unassisted goal at the 24:36 mark. She scored twice during that span and also recorded helpers on both of Pappas’ tallies.
Mount St. Mary’s scored two of the final three goals of
the first half, but the Retrievers led, 8-4, at the break.
Senior attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored her
second goal of the game 2:20 into the second period to open the
scoring, but the Mountaineers countered with three of the next four
goals to pull to within 10-7 with 21 minutes remaining.
But freshman midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount
Hebron) sparked a 4-0 UMBC spurt to regain momentum for the
Retrievers, who led, 14-7, with 8:06 to play, and the teams traded
single goals over the final minutes.
Pappas’ six points came on four goals and two assists, while
Coady tallied three goals and three helpers for the second straight
game. Pappas added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and
two draw controls. Midfielder Esther Rufolo led Mount St.
Mary’s with four goals.
Senior Natalie Rau (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and sophomore
Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) split time in
goal and combined for six saves, while Brigid McTavish stopped five
shots for the Mount.
UMBC outshot Mount St. Mary’s, 22-18, and held a 17-13
advantage on ground balls and a 13-12 edge on draw controls.
The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, when they host No. 6
Loyola at 6:30 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
Notes: At 6-2, the Retrievers are off to their best start since
1994… Braerman moved into a tie with Kelly Fahey for sixth
place all-time at UMBC with 52 career assists.
