DePompeo Keeps Up Torrid Pace as Navy Wins
from press release
FRESNO, Calif. - The Navy women's lacrosse team
(8-1, 1-0 PL) cruised to a 22-6 win over Fresno State (0-7) at
Bulldog Stadium on Tuesday evening. Sophomore Jasmine DePompeo
(Sayville, N.Y.), the nation's leading scorer (48 points), produced
a career-high eight points on three goals and a new personal-best
five assists.
"We were happy with how the team played today," said head coach
Cindy Timchal. "It was a long trip out here but we played well and
got to work on our transition game and we scored on a lot of fast
breaks. We also wanted to win draw control battle and we did that
today as well."
Senior Katrina Nietsch (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman Molly
Hamilton (New Albany, Ohio) each tallied four goals, with Hamilton
also contributing six draw controls. Nietsch also had two draw
controls and three caused turnovers.
Junior Danielle Vivonetto (Rocky Point, N.Y.), sophomore Kathy
Young (Berwyn, Pa.) and freshman Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.)
each scored three times with one assist each.
After trading goals with Fresno State to open the game, Navy scored
seven straight to jump out to an 8-1 lead. After the Bulldogs broke
Navy's spurt, the Mids scored five straight to close out the half
with a 13-2 lead.
Nietsch scored all four of her goals in the first half and DePompeo
dished out all five of her assists in the opening
frame.
It was more of the same in the second as Navy tacked on nine more
goals, including the last four of the half, to match its season
high of 22.
Junior goalie Elaina Ponchione (Silver Spring, Md.) played the
first 30 minutes of the game in net to earn her eighth win of the
season and 35th of her career.
Navy outshot Fresno State, 36-16, and held a 21-8 edge in draw
controls.
Navy moves to 2-0 all-time against Fresno State and has now
outscored the Bulldogs in the series, 45-8. Fresno State is now the
eighth opponent that Navy has held to eight goals or fewer this
season (8-0 in those games).
Navy will continue its west coast swing with a game at California
on Thursday.
