Conway Scores Five as CCSU Routs Liberty

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Central Connecticut
lacrosse team dominated Liberty on Tuesday afternoon. The
Blue Devils improved to 4-2 on the season with the 19-10
victory. The Blue Devils led 8-6 at the half and then
exploded for an 9-0 run to start the second period. Central's
offense was led by five goals from sophomore Mackenzy Ryan and four
from senior Michele Conway.
Karis Walborn got the Flames on the board first with an early
strike, but Conway answered with a goal off of an assist from
sophomore Betsy Vendel. Walborn scored two straight goals to
give Liberty a 3-1 lead before junior Ashley Mara scored to make it
a 3-2 game.
The Blue Devils and Flames traded goals with Central tying the game
at six on a free position shot by sophomore Mackenzy. The
Blue Devils added two more goals in the final seconds of the half
to take a 8-6 lead into the break. Conway had the first of
those goals and junior Ashley Perkoski added the second on a free
position shot.
The Blue Devil offense came alive in the second half as Central ran
out to a 17-6 lead. Conway opened up the scoring on a free
position shot with 27:54 left in the half. She registered the
assist on the Blue Devils next two goals as Mackenzy found the net
for the third and fourth time.
Conway, Mara, freshman Amanda Toke, and sophomore Meaghan McCurry
each scored making it a 15-6 game before Mackenzy closed the 9-0
run with another pair of goals. Vendel assisted on three of
the Blue Devils goals during that run.
Liberty's Nina Dunay scored a goal to cut the Blue Devils lead to
17-7, but Central answered quickly. The Blue Devils answered
quickly as Conway and McCurry each assisted senior Lyndsey
Mastandrea on back-to-back goals giving the Blue Devils a 19-7
lead.
The Flames scored three times in the final two minutes to make it a
19-10 game. Central goalkeeper Erin DeLancey earned the win
while making seven saves. She improves to 4-2 on the
season.
Conway finished with a game-high seven points, four goals and three
assists. Vendel had two goals and four assists for six
points, and Mackenzy scored five times to lead the Blue Devils in
that category.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday when they host Howard on
Arute Field. That game begins at 3 p.m.
