Late Heroics Lead Boston U Over George Mason
from press release
BOSTON - Sophomore Danielle Etrasco forced
overtime on a goal with 2.2 seconds left in regulation and senior
Erica Baumgartner scored on the first possession of triple overtime
to lift the Boston University lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9
victory over George Mason on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson
Field.
The visiting Patriots (1-5) took their first lead of the game at
9-8 on a tally with 2:11 left in regulation and held BU scoreless
for a span of over 17 minutes.
Etrasco sent the game into overtime when she took a pass from
Baumgartner off a restart and scored from just outside the right
crease with only 2.2 seconds left on the clock to send the game in
overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period,
setting up a sudden-victory situation. Freshman goalkeeper
Christina Sheridan made her sixth and final save in the closing
seconds of the second overtime.
BU (3-2) earned all four draw controls in overtime, capped by
Baumgartner's to start the third. The senior brought the ball into
the Mason zone and waited for the right time before curling in
along the left side and firing a shot to the top right corner of
the goal at the 69:25 mark of the contest.
Baumgartner, Etrasco, senior Rachel Collins and sophomore Kristen
Mogavero each tallied two goals in the contest. Collins added a
pair of assists for a game-high four points.
Anna Kopecka, Julianne Tela, Madalyn Formato and Chelsea Gamble,
who gave Mason its only lead, each found the back of net twice for
the Patriots.
The Terriers outshot the Patriots, 27-20, and held advantages in
both ground balls (14-13) and draw controls (15-9). After starting
the game with two failed clears, BU went 9-for-9 the rest of the
way and broke up five of Mason's 15 clear attempts on the day.
