CCSU Wins Second Straight One-Goal Game

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - The Central
Connecticut lacrosse team improved to 3-2 on the season with a
13-12 victory over Niagara on Saturday afternoon. The Blue
Devils received three goal performances from sophomores Meaghan
McCurry, Betsy Vendel, and junior Ashley Perkoski.
McCurry got the Blue Devils off to a fast start with a goal less
than two minutes into the game. McCurry's goal came off of a
pass from senior Lyndsey Mastandrea. Central's lead
didn't last long as they surrendered three straight goals to
Niagara.
The Blue Devils took the lead back as senior Michele Conway
scored an unassisted goal with 20:16 left in the half.
Perkoski followed quickly with a pair of goals off of free
position shots giving the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead with 13:23 left in
the period.
Niagara went on a 5-1 run to build a 8-5 lead. The lone goal
during that run was scored by Vendel making the game 5-5.
After sophomore Mackenzy Ryan scored to cut the lead to 9-6,
Niagara answered making it 10-6, but Central went on a 7-3 run to
close out the game.
Vendel and McCurry each scored twice in the run, Perkoski also
scored as the trio of Blue Devils finished with three goals.
Central's final goal of the game came with 12:05 left as junior
Ashley Mara found Mackenzy for the Blue Devils 13th goal.
The final Blue Devil goal made it a 13-11 game. A late
comeback by Niagara produced a goal, but the Blue Devils held on
for a 13-12 victory.
Junior goalkeeper Erin DeLancey earned her third win of the season,
while making 13 saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday at Arute Field when
they host Liberty. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
