St. Mary's Tops Fresno for First Win

FRESNO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team
picked up its first win of the season with a 15-4 win over Fresno
State in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Thursday
afternoon at Bulldog Stadium. Jillian Chong scored four goals while
Allie DeBruhl and Mariah Walk scored three apiece.
With the win, Saint Mary's improves to 1-4, 1-2 MPSF while Fresno
State drops to 0-6, 0-4 MPSF.
In addition to Chong, DeBruhl and Walk scoring multiple goals,
Juliet Munroe, Krista Morgan, Katie Nelson, Holly Hayes and Anna
Maria Carabini all scored for SMC.
After the Bulldogs got on the board first, Morgan went through
several defenders and scored a goal to tie the game at 1-1 with
16:45 left. With the score tied at 2-2, Walk scored to put the
Gaels up by a goal with 11:00 left in the half. Walk's goal sparked
a 4-0 run by the Gaels as Munroe scored, followed by back-to-back
goals by Chong as SMC led 6-2 with 6:53 remaining.
After Fresno State scored to stop the SMC scoring run, Hayes and
Carabini scored two unanswered goals to give the Gaels an 8-3 lead
at the break.
The Bulldogs scored the first goal of the second half to pull
within four goals but the Gaels shutout FS the rest of the way,
outscoring the Bulldogs 7-1 in the second half. DeBruhl had three
second half scores to pace the Gaels.
Saint Mary's outshot Fresno State 32-13 and tallied 12 groundballs
compared to eight by the Bulldogs.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Lafayette in
its home opener at Saint Mary's Stadium.
