Fairfield Uses Eight-Goal Run to Top SHU

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University
women's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goal in a 5:11 span
in the second-half to pull away for a 19-12 win over visiting
Sacred Heart University on Alumni Field on Wednesday. The win
improved the Stags' record to 4-1, while the Pioneers fell to
1-3.
Sacred Heart scored back-to-back goals early in the second-half to
close within 7-5 with 25:17 to play in regulation, when the Stags
offense kicked in. Addie Reilly (Locust Valley, N.Y.) started the
Stags run with an unassisted goal at 23:59. Chloe Mangan (Sayville,
N.Y.) struck 17 seconds later, which was followed by a pair of
Melanie Raso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) goals 50 seconds apart to push the
Stags advantage to 11-5 with 21:23 to play. Mangan fed Brittany
Bare (Mason, Ohio) at the 20:57 mark and Katie Mackay (Salem,
Conn.) put home the eventual game-winner 39 seconds later
unassisted.
Raso and Mangan both tallied five points in the game, with Raso
touching net four times and Mangan handing out two assists. Mackay
also finished with two assists, as well as her game-winning tally.
Reilly put home four goals for the Stags, while Jenna Slowey
(Moorestown, N.J.) struck twice.
On the defensive end, Katie Keenan (Wantagh, N.Y.) picked up the
win for the Stags, making a pair of saves in her 54:44 of action.
Kelley Brady (Olney, Md.) minded the net for the final 5:16 and
made three saves, while allowing two goals. The Stags caused 12
turnovers on the day, with three from Renee L'Heureux (Glastonbury,
Conn.) and two from Amanda Best (Schenectady, N.Y.)
Katie Kmiotek (Farmingville, N.Y.) led all scorers with six goals,
while Kelsey Russo (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) touched net four times.
Shelby Vaccaro (Brightwater, N.Y.) handed out two of the Pioneers
three assists on the afternoon. Jessica Ingrilli (Wantagh, N.Y.)
had a team-best three ground balls and three draw controls, while
Vaccaro has two caused turnovers. Megan Pepe (Westhampton, N.Y.)
minded the net for all 60 minutes, making six saves.
Fairfield finished the game with a 17-13 advantage in ground balls,
led by three from Mangan. The Stags also had an 18-15 advantage in
draw controls with Raso collecting a team-best five. Fairfield
cleared the ball successfully 13-16, while Sacred Heart was
8-13.
The Stags are back in action on Saturday when they will host New
Hampshire at 1 p.m.
