Clark Ties Career High in Wagner Victory
from press release
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior midfielder
Carolyn Clark (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) tied her career high with
five goals and added two assists while freshman midfielder Leea
Sinay (Marcellus, NY/ Marcellus) added a career-high four goals as
the Wagner women’s lacrosse team posted its first win of the
season, a 20-11 vanquishing of Presbyterian.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 1-2 on the young season
while the Blue Hose fall to 1-5. Today’s game marked the
first of two contests to be played at High Point University during
Wagner’s Spring Break, as the Seahawks will face host High
Point on March 10 at 6:00 pm.
In addition to Clark and Sinay’s offensive exploits, Wagner
received three goals apiece from junior attack Annie O’Connor
(Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) and junior midfielder Lauren Petrik
(Syracuse, NY/ Baldwinsville) as nine different Seahawks scored
goals. For O’Connor, it marked her second consecutive
three-goal game, coming on the heels of a hat trick at Manhattan on
March 2, while Petrik’s three goals are a career high.
Sophomore attack Erika Bulken (Syracuse, NY/ C.W. Baker) led the
Seahawks with three assists while tying junior midfielder Melanie
Garces (San Diego, CA/ Westview) for team-high honors in draw
controls with five.
After Presbyterian took the early 1-0 lead, Wagner reeled off
seven consecutive goals, with three of the tallies coming from
Bulken. After the Blue Hose cut the deficit to 8-4, the Seahawks
received goals from O’Connor and freshman Michela Galante
(Maplewood, NJ/ Columbia) to build a seemingly comfortable 10- 4
advantage. Presbyterian, however, countered by closing the half
with three consecutive goals to make it a 10-7 game at
intermission.
Wagner put the game out of each by opening the second half with an
eight-goal onslaught in racing out to an insurmountable 18-7 lead
with 9:26 remaining in the game. Clark kick-started the Seahawk
splurge with a pair of goals within the first 3:10 of the half and
later added two more goals in the run as Wagner never looked
back.
Sophomore midfielder Melanie Gorman (Medford, NJ/ Shawnee),
sophomore attack Jillian Maloney (Mahopac, NY/ Mahopac), Galante,
senior attack Karlee Keller (Colorado Springs, CO/ Cheyenne
Mountain) and freshman attack Sam Morin (Rockville Centre, NY/
South Side) each tallied one goal apiece for the Seahawks.
Shannon Hartford paced Presbyterian with three goals while Susan
England had 12 saves in goal.
The Seahawks out-shot the Blue Hose 35-31 and led in draw controls
18-15 while the Blue Hose held a 28-26 edge in the ground ball
department. Wagner was 3-of-4 in free position shots while
Presbyterian was 1-of-1.
Senior Marcela Hernandez (Freeport, NY/ Freeport) recorded five
saves in the first half in recording the win before giving way to
freshman Morgan Roach (Syracuse, NY/ Westhill) who came up with
five saves in the second half.
NOTE - The 20 goals are the most scored by Wagner since April 9,
2009 when the Seahawks defeated LIU 22-16.
