Frosh Gennaro Leads Navy Past Robert Morris
from press release
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Freshman Aimee Gennaro
scored a season-high six goals to lead visiting Navy (6-1) to a
16-5 win over Robert Morris (1-1) in women's lacrosse action on
Saturday afternoon. The Mids stormed out to a 10-1 first half lead
and never looked back as the team successfully rebounded from its
18-8 loss to No. 2 Northwestern on Thursday.
"I am very pleased with our first road performance of the year
today, considering the pretty poor weather conditions and it being
our second game in three days," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We
had some great individual offensive efforts from Aimee Gennaro and
Caitlin Mandrin Hill and Jen Eikenberg had a great day on defense
with four caused turnovers."
Senior captain Caitlin Mandrin Hill scored just 26 seconds into the
game to get Navy off to a fast start. After a Colonial answer two
minutes later, the Mids pieced together a 10-0 run to put the game
out of reach.
Mandrin Hill scored Navy's second goal off an assist from sophomore
Jasmine DePompeo and then Gennaro netted her first of the game to
push Navy's lead to 3-1.
Sophomore Kathy Young then scored, followed by a third Mandrin Hill
tally. Senior Katrina Nietsch then got on the board before DePompeo
scored back-to-back goals.
Gennaro then scored again and freshman Jill Coughlin added the
final goal of the half to give the Mids a 10-1 lead. Gennaro opened
the second-half scoring 1:55 into the frame to cap Navy's 10-0
run.
After Robert Morris scored to end the run, Gennaro and Coughlin
found the back of the net to extend the lead to 13-2. Robert Morris
then got back-to-back goals from Cara Hernandez. Gennaro then added
her fifth goal on a free position shot. Robert Morris connected a
minute later for their final goal of the game and two more tallies
from Gennaro and freshman Molly Hamilton rounded out the scoring at
16-5.
Gennaro's six goals on the day surpassed her previous season high
of four.
Mandrin Hill posted a season-high of six points on three goals and
three assists and DePompeo had two goals and three assists.
Junior goalie Elaina Ponchione improved to 6-1 on the season,
making four saves.
Sophomore Jen Eikenberg had a team-high four caused turnovers.
Navy outshot the Colonials, 31-13.
Navy will next open Patriot League play at Bucknell on Saturday.
The Mids are the defending Patriot League Champions and were picked
to repeat in the league's preseason poll. Earlier this season,
Robert Morris defeated Bucknell, 9-5.
