Lane's Late Goal Lifts 'Nova over La Salle
from press release
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- A goal from Shannon Lane
with just 30 seconds remaining in the second half lifted Villanova
(3-1 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) to a 6-5 victory over La Salle in a
non-conference women's lacrosse battle on Friday night.
The Wildcats, as they did in Tuesday's home win over LIU, set the
pace early with three unanswered goals. Senior Rachel Lasda got the
scoring started for Villanova at 26:26 when she recorded an
unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, freshman Ali Judge
picked up an unassisted goal to push the lead to 2-0. Sophomore
Maria Bowman made it a 3-0 advantage with an unassisted goal at
23:39.
Playing at home, though, the Explorers responded with three goals
of their own over the final 18 minutes of the first half. Melanie
Sarcinello converted a free position attempt at 18:14 and then
Lauren McDermott added an unassisted goal at the 14:00 minute mark
to slice the lead to one. La Salle then drew even 29 seconds before
halftime when Maggie O'Ferrall fired a free position goal into the
net.
Jackie Roebuck put La Salle in front at 23:01 with an unassisted
goal. Villanova pulled even on a goal off the stick of Katie
Collopy at 20:32. At 10:25, freshman Caroline Guidera gave VU the
lead again at 5-4 before the Explorers answered with a Taylor
Ruland goal with 5:36 left in the half.
That set the stage for Lane's late heroics.
A feed from Bowman freed Lane, who beat Megan Corliss with her
shot. The Explorers dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Freshman Julia Todd made eight saves in net for Villanova. La Salle
owned a 24-9 edge in shots on the night.
