St. Joseph's No Match for Lehigh
from press release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s
lacrosse team bounced back from Saturday’s tough overtime
defeat in grand fashion, handling the Saint Joseph’s Hawks,
16-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior
Lauren Dykstra led a balanced scoring attack which saw seven
different Mountain Hawks (2-1) score goals.
The 13-goal win marked Lehigh’s largest since a 20-4 victory
over Lafayette last Mar. 20. The three goals allowed were fewest
since a 13-2 win over Bucknell last year.
“It’s a good win, especially after not a great
performance on Saturday [against Delaware],” said head coach
Jill Redfern. “It was a team performance with a lot of
contributions from different players. It allowed our whole lineup
to get some great experience as well.”
Dykstra led the way with six points behind five goals and an
assist, her 16th career game with five or more goals and already
her second this season. Senior Allison Thomas and junior Kelly
Draper also finished with four points. Thomas posted two goals and
two assists while Draper added three goals and an assist.
Sophomores Megan Kelly and Julie McBrien finished with three points
apiece while freshman Chelsea Retaleato and sophomore Anna
Patterson each added a pair. The three points for McBrien marked a
career high.
Saint Joseph’s netted the first goal of the game at 27:57 of
the first half to give it a 1-0 lead, but Lehigh responded with
nine straight tallies to close out the half. Dykstra had four of
them, starting the Mountain Hawks’ scoring at 26:02, then
adding markers at 18:37, 10:50 and 2:04. Kelly ended the half with
her first of the game with only 13 seconds on the clock.
The momentum carried into the second half as the Mountain Hawks
scored their 10th straight at 27:70 to give them a 10-1 advantage.
Saint Joseph’s came back with a Grace Dinn tally at 26:32,
but Lehigh went on to score three straight and six of the
game’s final seven goals to run away with the 16-3
victory.
Draper enjoyed a strong all-around game, adding three draw
controls, three ground balls and four caused turnovers to go along
with her three goals and assist. Dykstra led the way with four draw
controls while Kelly also added three.
Freshman Alexandra Fitzpatrick was strong in goal, making three
first-half saves before being relieved by sophomore MaryLeah
DiNisco, who made two stops in the second.
Lehigh led the final shot count, 30-14, while finishing with 14
draw controls to seven for Saint Joseph’s. The Mountain Hawks
were a perfect 22-of-22 on clears while the Hawks were
16-of-22.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Saturday as they travel to
Gainesville, Fla. to take on the No. 14 University of Florida
Gators at 1 p.m. Lehigh will be back at the Ulrich Sports Complex
on Wednesday March 9 to take on Siena at 3:30 pm.
