UConn Rallies for Win over Quinnipiac
from press release
HAMDEN, Conn. -- The quartet of Lauren Sparks,
M.E. Lapham, Kacey Pippitt and Lauren Kahn combined for 13 goals
this afternoon, leading the University of Connecticut lacrosse team
over Quinnipiac, 17-12 at the Quinnipiac University Lacrosse Turf
Field. With the win, UConn improves to 3-0 on the season, while the
Bobcats fall to 0-2.
"We got out to a good start today, but we kind of slumped a bit in
the last 13 minutes of the first half and let Quinnipiac get some
easy goals," head coach Katie Woods said. "We started the second
half with that same slump, but picked it up and dominated for the
rest of the game. Megan Lally had an awesome game for us today,
recording some huge groundballs, while Brittney Testa made some big
saves in the second half."
The Huskies got out to a strong start, posting five straight goals
to earn a 5-0 lead just seven minutes in to the game. Two of those
goals came from Kahn, as she posted three during the contest.
The Bobcats were finally able to get on the board at the eight
minute mark of the first half when Marissa Caroleo and Laura
Iannotti posted back-to-back goals, putting the score at 5-2 UConn.
The Huskies and the Bobcats traded goals throughout the rest of the
first half, with both teams posting six goals, as they went to the
halftime break with UConn holding an 11-8 lead.
UConn opened the second half of play with a Lapham goal less than
one minute in, but Quinnipiac answered with three goals of its own
during a four minute span, bringing the score within one, at 12-11
UConn.
That would be as close as the Bobcats would get though, as the
Huskies responded with four unanswered goals and allowed just one
more Quinnipiac tally as UConn controlled play for the rest of the
second half to earn the 17-12 victory. All six second half goals
came from different Huskies, with Lapham, Kahn, Sparks, Pippitt,
Mackenzie Rainone and Stefanie Burra each posting a score.
The Huskies held a 40-17 shot advantage throughout the contest,
as they also held a 13-8 lead in ground balls and a 20-11 edge in
draw controls. Rainone posted three ground balls and two caused
turnovers against the Bobcats, while Pippitt had four draw controls
and two ground balls and Megan Lally posted two ground balls and
two draw controls.
Brittney Testa recorded 11 saves during the game, including seven
in the second half to hold off the Bobcat offense.
The Huskies return to action on March 7 and March 9 when they face
Boston College and Holy Cross at the National Training Center in
Clermont, Florida. UConn will face BC at 1:00 p.m. on March 7 and
will then face Holy Cross at Noon on March 9.
