Virginia Tech Beats Mason, Improves to 4-0
from press release
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech Lacrosse
team made it four straight to open the season on Saturday afternoon
when it opened home play with a 15-7 victory over George Mason at
Thompson Field. The Hokies improve to 4-0 on the year, while the
Patriots drop to 0-3.
Junior Morgan Widlake sparked the Tech offense against Mason. She
got the Hokies on the board first for the third time this season
and went on to score the team’s first four goals. Widlake
finished the day with a career high seven scores.
Tech dominated play from the opening draw and built up a
comfortable 6-2 lead with just over ten minutes to go in the first
half, but Mason made things interesting when Madalyn Jamison and
Mary Schwartz put away two quick goals for the Patriots to make it
6-4.
The Hokies responded to the scores with five straight goals of
their own to close the first half, including one from Widlake on a
quick pass from sophomore Julia Heaps with 15 seconds to go.
The Patriots scored quickly out of the intermission and tacked on a
second goal just minutes later to make it 11-6, but the Hokies took
control of the game and slowed the pace, running time off the clock
and playing at the tempo they wanted. Though they already put the
game away, the Hokies closed out the game with three-straight
goals, but only one in the final ten minutes.
Junior Jessica Nonn was the only other Hokie to score more than one
goal, as she tallied four on the day. Chelsea Gamble was the only
Patriot with multiple scores as she paced Mason with three
goals.
Tech outshot the Patriots 34-16 in the game and took a 15-8
advantage on draw controls.
Sophomore Alex Gale finished the day with six saves, while
Mason’s Brittany Pastrana tallied 13 saves in cage.
The Hokies return to action on Wednesday, March 2 as they continue
play at Thompson Field and host James Madison at 4 p.m.
