Hurley's Five Leads Jacksonville Past Fresno
from press release
EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore Amanda Hurley tied a
career high with five goals while Abigail Warnken and Ellyn
Spangenberg tallied hat tricks to lead the JU women’s
lacrosse team to a 19-6 victory over Fresno State in a neutral site
contest at Oregon’s Pape’ Field on Saturday
afternoon.
Ten players scored goals for the Dolphins, helping the squad
improve to 3-1. JU built a 13-1 halftime advantage over Fresno
State, dropping the Bulldogs to 0-3. Fresno State is now 0-31 since
launching its program in 2009.
Hurley provided an offensive spark as a reserve. The attacker
scored four goals in the first half to help JU surge to a 13-0 run.
Hurley tied her single-game high set last April 24 against
Presbyterian.
Warnken came in on a three-game scoring drought but quickly found
the scoring touch that led to 14 goals in 2010. Warnken opened the
scoring just 31 seconds in and contributed two more second-half
insurance goals for her first career hat trick. The sophomore
midfielder also added two ground balls and two caused turnovers and
needed just four shots to reach the three-goal mark.
Spangenberg has now scored in all four games and has a team-leading
eight goals along with a 2.0 goals-per-game average. The sophomore
middie chipped in an assist for a four-point afternoon, falling
just one shy of a career high.
JU dominated the Bulldogs from the opening draw, crafting a 24-6
edge in shots through the opening 30 minutes. The Dolphins scored
five goals in the opening 10:16 and only Fresno State
goalkeeper’s Lisa Barnaba’s seven saves prevented JU
from holding an even larger edge entering the break.
Sophomore goalkeeper Karli Tobin capitalized on the goal support,
making three saves through 45 minutes before being spelled by
Elizabeth Gatch (two saves). Before the respite, Tobin had been the
only player to see time in the cage for the Dolphins this
season.
Rachel Krell registered her first multi-goal game of the season,
scoring once in each half. Freshman Nikki Erdely found the score
sheet again. The first-year attacker has seven goals through her
first four games.
Ali Hoffman, Jen Cosgrove and Chelsea Watts rounded out the JU
scoring. The Dolphins will look to end its West Coast swing strong
on Sunday with a contest against the University of Oregon. Game
time is set for 3 p.m. Eastern.
