Feirstein's Fourth Clinches It for Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth
University (1-1) lacrosse team came from behind to defeated the
Columbia University (0-1), 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Kessler
Field.
Senior Rachel Feirstein (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) scored her
fourth goal of the game, the game winner, with 1:55 remaining and
goalkeeper Kirby Mundorf (Cambridge, Md./Seton Keough) made two
saves within the last ten seconds to preserve the win. MU
improves to 1-1 with the win while the Lions fall to 0-1 on the
year.
The Lions' Kacie Johnson scored with 2:12 on a wrap around to tie
the score at 8-8. MU responded 17 seconds later as Feirstein
converted her second free position, beating Columbia goalkeeper
Karlee Blank low to push the Hawks ahead, 9-8.
Columbia jumped ahead 3-0 within the first seven minutes of the
game. Monmouth answered and cut the lead to 3-1 with 21:47
left in the first half when senior Rachel Feirstein (St. James,
N.Y./Smithtown East) took a feed from junior Erica Abendschoen
(West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) and beat Blank.
Columbia answered two minutes later when Olivia Mann registered her
second goal of the game and pushed the Lions lead to 4-1.
With 16:54 left in the first, junior Olivia Salata (Broomall,
Pa./Archbishop) found senior Kaitlin Feeney (Baltimore, Md.
(Townson) who found the back of the net to cut the lead to two,
4-2. MU continued their offensive attack as Feirstein fired a
laser beyond the eight meter 1:54 later to put the Hawks within
one.
Columbia halted the Hawks run with 11:59 left in the half as Paige
Cuscovitch gave the Lions a two goal advantage. Less than a
minute later, the Hawks controlled the draw control as Salata took
it the unassisted and placed in the top right corner of the net to
cut the lead to 5-4.
Gianna D'Urso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) knotted the game at 5-5
with just over three minutes left in the half, as the sophomore
converted a free position.
The Lions started the second half as they scored twice within the
first five minutes to regain a two goal advantaged. Sophomore
Molly O'Brien (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) took a feed from
junior Lynn White (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) to bring the Hawks
within one, 6-5, with 24:25 remaining. O'Brien then tied the
game six minutes later as she beat Blank low to knot the game at
7-7.
Monmouth took its first lead of the game with 14:29 remaining as
Feirstein found the back of the cage to push the Hawks ahead
8-7.
Feirstein filled out the stats sheet with four goals on six shots
with five ground balls and three draw controls. O'Brien had a
pair of goals with two ground balls and two draws. Mundorf
had 10 saves in the win for MU.
Columbia was led by Johnson, Custovitch and Mann, each who had two
goals. MU outshot Columbia 26-20 while earning a 12-7
advantage in draw controls. Blank had 12 saves in net for the
Lions.
The Hawks return to action as the welcome the Leopards of Lafayette
to Kessler Field on Wednesday, March 2nd for a 3 p.m.
