Lapham Leads UConn to Win over Binghamton
from press release
STORRS, Conn. -- M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) recorded five goals for the second consecutive game to lead the Huskies past Binghamton, 11-9 in the 2011 home opener this afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. With the victory UConn is now 2-0 on the season, while Binghamton falls to 0-2.
Binghamton opened the scoring at the 3:44 mark, and got out to a 3-1 lead just 12 minutes into the contest as the Huskies let up two goals just 21 seconds apart at the 10:54 and 11:15 marks. UConn would answer back with five straight goals to end the half though, including three from Lapham sending the Huskies into halftime with a 6-3 lead.
The Bearcats brought the score to 6-5 after posting two straight goals to open the second half, but that would be as close as Binghamton would get for the remainder of the contest.
The Husky offense struck again with four consecutive goals starting with a Mackenzie Rainone (Syracuse, N.Y.) goal at the 10:23 mark and ending with a Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.) tally at 13:57 of the second half.
In the 17th minute Lapham gave the Huskies an 11-7 advantage with her fifth goal of the game, but the Bearcats did not let up, pressuring for two additional goals before the game was over, for the 11-9 UConn victory.
Lapham and four other Huskies recorded goals during the contest, including two from Kahn and Kacey Pippitt (New Canaan, Conn.), while the Bearcats were led by Beth Moore who posted three goals.
With her five goals today, Lapham is now ninth all-time at UConn with 76 career goals, and has posted five or more goals in four contests throughout her collegiate career.
UConn will now travel to Quinnipiac on Sunday (Feb. 27) for a 12:00 Noon contest against the Bobcats.
