Caroleo Scores Six in Fairfield Victory

The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team opened the home portion of its schedule with a 17-11 win over Quinnipiac University on Alumni Field Friday afternoon. The Stags improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Bobcats fall to 0-1.
Fairfield's offense wasted little time in getting on track as
the Stags won the opening draw and Melanie Raso put home her first
shot of the day into the back of the next 15 seconds into the game.
Caitlin Townsend scored 44 seconds later for the Stags as they
tallied the first six goals of the game in the first 4:25 of the
game.
Quinnipiac got on the board for the first time at the 25:23 mark
and struck again just under a minute later to cut their deficit to
four, 6-2. After over six minutes of scoreless action, Brittany
Bare touched net for her first tally of the day and started the
Stags second6-0 run of the game, giving Fairfield a 12-2 lead with
7:58 to play before intermission. After a Quinnipiac goal made the
Stags lead 12-3, Jenna Slowey tallied the final goal of the half,
with 50 seconds to play, to give Fairfield a 13-3 halftime
edge.
Quinnipiac started the scoring in the second-half less than a
minute into the period, but Chloe Mangan converted consecutive free
position goals to fend off a potential rally. Fairfield built a
17-6 advantage on Katie Phillips goal with 9:33 to play, before the
Bobcats tallied the final five goals of the contest.
Mangan led the Stags with four goals, while Bare also tallied
four points on two goals and two assists. Amanda Best scored twice,
and had an assist, as did Townsend, while Jenna Slowey scored three
times. Raso added a pair of goals and two draw controls. Mangan had
four of the Stags 15 caused turnovers, with Townsend adding three
caused turnovers. Mangan also had a team-high six ground balls,
while Slowey picked up five ground balls and Bare had four.
The Bobcats were led by the six goals of Marissa Caroleo, while
Laura Iannotti added two goals and an assist. The Bobcats had 18
turnovers on the day with eight caused turnovers.
Katie Keenan earned the win in net for the Stags, making nine saves
and allowing six goals in 50:27 of action. Kelley Brady played the
final 9:33 in goal and made two saves in that time. Lexi DeStefano
allowed 10 goals in playing the first 20:34 of the game for the
Bobcats and took the loss. Noelle Martello played the final 39:26
for Quinnipiac and made four saves.
Fairfield is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Holy Cross at
4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
