Va. Tech Enjoys Best Start Since 1999

DAVIDSON, N.C. - For the first time since 1999,
the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team improved to 3-0 to
begin the season after defeating the Davidson Wildcats 15-5 at
Richardson Stadium in Wednesday night. The Wildcats fall to 0-3 on
the year.
After not scoring at all against Presbyterian College last weekend,
junior Jessica Nonn returned to true form at Davidson, burying
three goals in the first half and four in the game. Her first of
the evening came after senior Allie Emala’s free position
attempt was blocked and loose in front of the goal. Nonn found the
stray ball and put it in the goal.
Tech took off after Nonn’s initial goal, scoring three more
in a row. The Hokies were able to keep the Wildcats off the board
until the 16th minute, when Jenna Mugele put away a pass from Erin
Keitel.
Though the Hokies controlled the ball for much of the half, the
Wildcats took the edge on draws, 8-4, awarding them possession but
the 10 turnovers disrupted most opportunities.
To end the half, sophomore Julia Heaps received a pass on a fast
break and sent a powerful shot into the back of the net just as the
buzzer went off to give Tech a 9-3 advantage at the half.
Heaps carried over her half-ending momentum after the break and
scored Tech’s first goal of the second half. Following the
score, the Hokies tacked on two more early as the pace of the game
slowed.
A scoring drought for both teams would ensue after junior Ryan
Rotanz’s goal in the 16th minute put Tech up by ten, 13-3,
allowing the clock to run.
Nearly ten minutes later, Davidson’s Alanna Parker ended the
running clock when she added a fourth goal for the Wildcats
immediately after Nonn earned her second yellow card of the
game.
The Hokies outshot Davidson 32-11 in the game, but the Wildcats
kept the advantage on draw controls, finishing the game with 12,
compared to Tech’s nine.
Sophomore Alex Gale made her third-straight start in cage for the
Hokies and finished the day with three saves, while Jessica Melby
made six saves on the night in goal.
Tech returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 as it hosts George
Mason in its home opener at 1 p.m.
