Denkler, Kirk Lead Vandy Over Canisius
from press release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Five goals from senior
Katherine Denkler and six points by junior Courtney Kirk led the
11th-ranked Commodore lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over Canisius
Tuesday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
After Denkler scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute,
Canisius' Carly Quinn tied the game up at 1-1. The Commodores then
used 10 straight goals to open up an 11-1 lead late in the first
half.
Denkler scored four times in the game's first 17 minutes and would
pace the Commodores in goals for the second time this season. Eight
Commodores tallied goals on the day, including two each from senior
Emily Franke, Kirk and fellow junior Ally Carey, and freshman Katie
Mastropieri.
Vanderbilt's goalkeepers combined to save seven of the 12 shots
they faced on the day. Canisius' Allison Daley made 11 stops
against 27 VU shots on goal.
The Commodores' success again started in the center circle, as
Vanderbilt held a 16-7 advantage in draw controls led by three
apiece from Carey and sophomore Carly Linthicum.
Vanderbilt remains at home for a key American Lacrosse Conference
matchup this Sunday, Feb. 27, welcoming second-ranked Northwestern
to VU Lacrosse Complex for a 12 Noon CT game. The Commodores will
then play host to Cincinnati on Wednesday, March 2.
