Big East Releases Weekly Women Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Impressive
season-opening wins helped Villanova and Loyola capture the first
BIG EAST women's lacrosse weekly awards. Villanova junior Justine
Donodeo earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, while
Loyola junior Kerry Stoothoff was named BIG EAST Defensive Player
of the Week.
Donodeo had seven points, with four goals and three assists in a 1-0 week. In a 16-8 win over Bryant, the junior helped the team get off to an undefeated start as she scored four goals in the first half. Donodeo is the first Villanova player to earn BIG EAST women's lacrosse Player of the Week honors. The Wildcats are in their second year of BIG EAST competition.
Stoothoff earns BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolades for her performance in a 15-8 win over then-No. 7/7 Virginia on Feb. 19. The junior made eight saves and picked up a team-leading three ground balls. Stoothoff also helped hold Virginia to 0-4 on free-position shots.

caused turnover in an 18-4 win over Binghamton.
Ashley Herbst, Louisville, Fr., GK
Made 12 saves in an 18-4 season-opening win over Binghamton;
helped hold the Bearcats without a goal in the second half.
M.E. Lapham, Connecticut, Jr., A
Had six points, including five goals in an 18-11 win over
Iona.
Marlee Paton, Loyola, Fr., A
Scored four goals along with two draw controls and one ground ball
in a 15-8 win over then-No. 7/7 Virginia.
Maggie Tamasitis, Notre Dame, Jr., A
Had 13 points, including nine assists last week; tied her
career-high with five points, including four assists against
then-No. 2/2 Northwestern.
THE INSIDE SCOOP
2011 UNDERWAY – A majority of the BIG EAST women's lacrosse
teams began the 2011 season last weekend as seven of the league's
nine teams were in action. Rutgers opens its season this week
against Temple, while Georgetown starts the year on March. 5.
PRESEASON HONORS – For the second consecutive year, the BIG EAST women's lacrosse coaches have selected Georgetown as the favorite in the BIG EAST women's lacrosse preseason poll. The Hoyas totaled 59 points, including four first-place votes and were narrowly picked ahead of Syracuse (57 points), which had three first-place selections. Notre Dame (50 points) and Loyola (47 points) each earned a first-place vote as well.
Loyola senior Grace Gavin was tabbed as the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and was one of eight unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST honorees. For the second straight year, Syracuse senior Liz Hogan earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors, as well as Preseason All-BIG EAST accolades.
