Virginia Tech Downs Presbyterian 18-8
from press release
CLINTON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s
lacrosse team held on for a big 18-8 defeat of Presbyterian College
on Saturday afternoon. The Hokies have never lost to the Blue Hose
and are 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2006. PC
falls to 0-2 on the year.
Despite a sluggish start, Tech dominated the first half of play. For the second-straight game, Morgan Widlake got Tech on the board first, as she put away a free position goal to kick things off. Junior Ryan Rotanz highlighted the first half as she tallied four goals in the first 30 minutes.
PC’s Brianne Ward challenged the early Tech lead when she put in a free position shot of her own to make it 2-1 in the first five minutes.
The Hokies pulled away, though, not allowing the Blue Hose to score again until just before halftime when Anne-Marie Smith put away a pass from Ward with just seconds remaining on the clock.
Tech’s production slowed after halftime, as it allowed PC to score the first two goals of the second half. The Hokies broke up the short run when senior Caitlyn Wier buried a pass from junior Jessica Nonn to make it 14-4.
The two teams would continue to flirt with the 10-goal differential, trading goals after the run until Tech put together a run of its own when Julia Heaps, Kelly Naslonski and Libby Rosebro each found the back of the goal.
The Blue Hose were able to put away two more goals before the final buzzer but the difference was too much to overcome.
Senior attacker Allie Emala extended her scoring streak to seven games after scoring two goals on the Blue Hose, and junior Jessica Nonn ended her 18-game streak with one assist but no goals in the game.
Sophomore Alex Gale got the start in goal and played the first 30 minutes, but was relieved but classmate Alexis Carey in the second half. The pair combined for five saves in the game. Katelyn Luker also saw action in cage towards the end of the game. PC’s Susan English manned the cage for the Blue Hose and made 15 saves.
Tech will hit the field again on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as it travels to Davidson for a 6 p.m. game.
