UMass Women Down Vermont to Move to 2-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Jackie Lyons posted six points
(3 goals, 3 assists) and Haley Smith netted four goals as the UMass
women's lacrosse improved to 2-0 on the season with a 17-9 win over
Vermont on Saturday at McGuirk Stadium. Nine different players
scored a goal for UMass which will play at Boston University next
Wednesday.
Along with Lyons and Smith, Danielle Pelletier, Jesse O'Donnell,
and Sam Rush had multi-goal games for the Minutewomen. Katie
Florence earned her second win of the season making nine saves -
eight in the second half.
Vermont (0-1) was led by Samantha Stern who scored three goals and
Natalie Jones who had two goals and an assist.
The Minutewomen took an 8-4 lead into halftime as Smith, Pelletier,
O'Donnell and Rush each scored a pair of goals.
UMass extended its lead to 11-4 to start the second half with goals
from Nina Sarcona, Dayna Defliese and Lyons in the first eight
minutes of play.
Cori Murray gave the Minutewomen a 16-6 lead with 5:31 left in
regulation before the Catamounts responded with three of the final
four goals scored in the game.
The Catamounts held a 30-to-27 edge in shots and a 16-to-12
advantage in draw controls. UMass forced 16 turnovers which led to
21 groundballs compared to just 13 groundballs for Vermont.
Free position shooting was also in the Minutewomen's favor as they
converted 2-of-3 attempts, while Vermont was 4-for-8.
