Duquesne Downs St. Francis

PITTSBURGH - Duquesne's lacrosse team opened the 2011 campaign with an 18-9 victory over visting St. Francis (Pa.) Saturday afternoon on a cold and windy, but sunny day on Rooney Field.

Haley Marafioti (4 goals, 1 assist), Katie Rekart (3 goals, 2 assists) and Caitlin Prince (3 goals, two assists) each had five points for the Red and Blue. Meredith Dunn also contributed four goals while goalkeeper Liz Walker picked up the win with four saves in 57 minutes of action.

The Dukes jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Marafioti scored twice and Dunn scored three straight goals. The Red and Blue scored four of the next seven tallies to take a 12-3 lead into the half.

DU continued where it left off in the second stanza, scoring the fist three goals and cruised to the victory.

The Red and Blue return to action on Thursday, Feb. 24 as they face Boston College at 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
