Drexel Opens with Win Over George Washington
from press release
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's
lacrosse team opened the 2011 season with a 14-9 victory over
George Washington. The Dragons outshot the Colonials 37-23 and had
seven different players knock in at least one goal at Mount Vernon
Field.
Freshmen Amanda Norcini recorded her first colligate goal and put
the Dragons up 1-0 within the first five minutes of play. Drexel
continued to put pressure on George Washington's defense and posted
three more goals. Drexel's Charlotte Wood had back-to-back scores,
along with Kelli Joran's unassisted goal gave Drexel an early 4-0
lead.
George Washington's Jordy Bathras ended the Dragons streak with an
unassisted goal with 9:49 left in the first half. The Colonials
went on a three-goal run, and closed the gap to a close 4-3 game.
George Washington's Mia Breheny scored with fourty-five seconds in
the first. Drexel was up by one at half, and held on to the lead
for the remainder of the game.
Junior standout Charlotte Wood led the Dragons with six goals and
tied her career high. Wood knocked in six goals against the 12-5
win over La Salle back in 2009. Teammates Jaclyn Klunder, Amanda
Gregg, and Julia Lanzetta registered a goal, while Alyse Maiden
recorded Drexel's only assist.
On the defensive end, Norcini recorded three groundballs and three
caused turnovers in her first start for the Dragons. Kelli Joran
and Kaitlin Harris led the team in draw controls with four each.
Harris also picked up four groundballs. Senior Katie Blazer tallied
two draw controls and three groundballs for Drexel.
The Dragons return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 against Saint
Joseph's at 4:00 p.m.
