Johnson, Schwarzmann Outscore Hens on Own

from press release

NEWARK, Del. - No. 1 Maryland's offense was once again on display as Karri Ellen Johnson and Katie Schwarzmann combined for 10 goals in a 17-8 rout of Delaware Wednesday.

Johnson, who boasts a team-high 12 goals this season, extended her streak to 47 games with a score at 15:53. It would be the junior's first of three in a three-minute span as Maryland went on a devastating 12-1 run to begin the contest.

Delaware picked up two late goals with time winding down in the first stanza but the Terps leapt to a 3-0 run in the beginning of the second half and played the Blue Hens even in the period, despite emptying their bench.

Maryland (2-0) boasted a fantastic shooting percentage, sinking 17 of the 23 shots it attempted in the match. Schwarzmann tied a career-high with five goals. Fellow classmate Alex Aust also put up career numbers, tacking on four goals, including the first ever scored in a women's lacrosse game at Delaware Stadium, and six points. Sarah Mollison added three helpers to her team-best nine in 2011 and moves past Anysia Fedec into eighth all-time in career assists.

"I thought we did well, especially when we started the game. We were finding our open players, working together well and putting our shots away," head coach Cathy Reese said. "As the game went on I thought we had some lapses defensively and Delaware was able to capitalize on those. We've got some things to work on from this point but overall I'm pleased with this performance."

Maryland plays host to No. 16 Penn State Saturday in the home opener at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex at noon.
