Balanced Effort Propels UMass over Richmond

from press release

RICHMOND, Va. -- Nina Sarcona led the UMass women's lacrosse team with three goals as the Minutewomen picked up a 12-8 win at Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Eight different Minutewomen scored goals as UMass (5-6) improved to 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play. It was UMass' first ever win at Richmond (4-7, 1-1 A-10) since the series began in 2002.

The Minutewomen will return to A-10 action at Temple next Saturday (1 PM) in the lone game of the week. UMass is now 8-1 in its last nine regular-season A-10 games and 15-8 in the league under head coach Alexis Venechanos.

The hat trick was the second of the season and her career for Sarcona. Jesse O'Donnell and Merritt Cosgrove each tallied twice. Danielle Pelletier and Jackie Lyons both had three point days with a goal and two assists. Haley Smith, Dayna Defliese and Lauren Terracciano each added a goal in the win.

Richmond was led by Mary Flowers who had three goals and an assist.

In goal, Katie Florence made nine saves for the win, while Erica Marrocco had five saves in the loss.

UMass took a 7-4 lead into halftime after outshooting the Spiders 19-to-6. O'Donnell opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game before Sarcona made it a 2-0 lead with 19:45 remaining in the first half. UMass made it 6-2 with 13:42 remaining on Defliese's goal.

Sam Tajirian scored with 3:48 to go and Anne Ryan tallied 38 seconds later to make it a two-goal game before O'Donnell pushed the lead back to three, 7-4, with 1:36 before the break.
Richmond started the second half with a pair of goals to make it 7-6 with 26:47 left in the game before UMass scored four straight.

After a Gabi Wiegand goal for the Spiders stopped the run, Cosgrove scored her second of the day with 4:42 to play to push the lead back to five, 12-7. Danielle Schaevitz scored with 1:54 remaining and won the ensuing draw control looking to score again. Florence made the save on Schaevitz next shot and the Minutewomen were able to clear the ball to run out the final 86 seconds.
