Latonick Named Quinnipiac Captain for 2010
from press release
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University
women's lacrosse Head Coach Danie Caro has announced that graduate
student Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) will serve as team
captain for the 2010 season. Latonick finished the 2009 campaign as
the team's second-leading scorer with 54 points after setting a
single-season record for assists with 44.
She was named to the 2009 Northeast Conference All-Tournament team
after racking up nine points on one goal and eight assists in two
games against Mount St. Mary's and Sacred Heart. Her nine points
helped the Bobcats reach the NEC Championship Game for the second
straight season.
"Katie is an excellent choice to lead the team. She has the respect
of her teammates and the coaching staff, and brings both experience
and maturity to the position," Caro said.
"It has been extremely rewarding to watch Katie's development, as a
lacrosse player, a student, and as a person, over the past four
years. She has evolved into an ideal student-athlete and is a great
role model for our younger players. I think Katie will do a great
job as captain, and she will have a solid group of returning
players to help her lead the team."
Seniors Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Brittany Hauser (East
Northport, N.Y.), along with juniors Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield,
Conn.) and Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) will all join
Latonick to form the core leadership group for the 2010 Quinnipiac
squad.
"Lyndsey (Banach), Brittany (Hauser), Lexi (DeStefano), and Lauren
(Matuszczak) are all players their teammates see as leaders, and
the coaching staff does too," added Caro. "Together, the five of
them will be expected to not only lead the team on the field, but
to help set the tone for the entire program by working closely with
the coaching staff."
The Bobcats return 19 players from last year's squad, which
captured the program's second Regular-Season NEC Championship. The
2009 Bobcats set school records for wins (13) and winning
percentage (.813), while also posting the highest winning
percentage in NEC history.
The Bobcats will begin the 2010 season on February 26 against
Fairfield at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey and Lacrosse Turf Field.
