Kalkstein Named VaSID Player of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior All-American Brittany
Kalkstein has been named the State Player of the Year, as announced
by the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Association (VaSID),
while seven other Cavaliers have been named to the all-state teams.
Seniors Kaitlin Duff and Caity Whiteley join Kalkstein and junior
Liz Downs on the first team, while redshirt junior Lauren Benner
and sophomores Charlie Finnigan, Bailey Fogarty and Josie Owen were
honored on the second team.
Kalkstein, a Tewaaraton Trophy and Honda Sports Award finalist, is
making her fourth-straight appearance on the all-state team and
third on the first team. A 2010 first-team All-American, the
Baltimore, Md., native broke the ACC and UVa career records for
draw controls (287) and also holds Virginia's single season record
for draws (97). A two-time All-American, Kalkstein earned All-South
Region, All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament team honors in 2010 and
garnered two national and two ACC player of the week honors. She
was also named the 2007 national, ACC and VaSID Freshman of the
Year.
Downs, a 2010 third-team All-American, is making her
second-straight appearance on the all-state first team. A two-time
All-South Region honoree, Downs was one of the top-three defenders
in the ACC this season and earned all-conference honors for her
achievements, in addition to All-ACC Academic Team accolades. UVa's
top mark up defender, the Alexandria, Va., native ranked fourth on
the team in ground balls (28) and third in caused turnovers
(17).
Duff is garnering her fourth VaSID all-state honor. The Bethesda,
Md., native is a two-time All-American, three-time All-South Region
honoree and three-time All-ACC selection. The team's top scorer,
Duff finished the year with a team-best 42 goals, 23 assists and 65
points. She also led the squad with 31 caused turnovers and
finished her career as the second person in program history to hit
100 in five career statistical categories (117 goals, 172 points,
174 ground balls, 110 draw controls, 127 caused turnovers).
Whiteley had a career year for the Cavaliers and is being honored
on the all-state team for the first time. An All-South Region and
All-ACC Academic Team honoree, Whiteley ranked fourth on the team
in points (52) and third in goals (31) and assists (21). The
Phoenix, Md., native had a career-best five goals at Virginia Tech
and had six multiple goal games and seven multiple assist contests
this year.
Benner, the Cavaliers' goalkeeper, earned All-South Region honors
after posting an overall record of 12-4 on the season, including a
5-1 record against in-state opponents. Benner went 10-2 during the
regular season and finished the year ranked 16th nationally with a
9.29 goals-against
average. She was ranked 38th nationally with a 44.8 save percentage
and was third on the team in ground balls (37). Benner scooped up a
career-high eight ground balls against No. 13 Princeton and reached
double-digit saves on four occasions, including a personal-best 13
at No. 2 Northwestern. From Arnold, Md., this marks the first
appearance on the all-state team for Benner.
Finnigan, Virginia's first international player – hailing
from London, England, is being honored on the all-state team for
the first time. Finnigan finished the year third on the team in
goals (34) and fourth in points (49). She was credited with two
game-winning goals and tallied a personal-best four scores on two
occasions. Finnigan also contributed eight multiple goal games and
three multiple assist contests this year.
Fogarty is a scrappy defender capable of breaking up offenses and
opponents transitions. The Chevy Chase, Md., native missed the NCAA
Tournament due to injury, but is making her first appearance on the
all-state team. She won a career-best six ground balls against No.
14 Loyola. Fogarty also had a season-best three draw controls at
No. 13 Penn State. The defender finished the year with 22 ground
balls, 18 draw controls and 15 caused turnovers.
Owen, from Gibson Island, Md., missed the final six games of year
due to injury. Ranked third on the team in goals and points before
injury, Owen finished the year ranked fifth in points (44) and
sixth in goals (24). A two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection,
Owen had a career-best game at Virginia Tech, scoring four goals
and adding five assists for nine points. She also tacked on five
ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. The
attacker had eight multiple goal games and four multiple assist
contests this year, and added one game-winning goal.
Virginia led all schools with eight selections to the two teams,
with four on the first team and four on the second. James Madison
also had four on the first team, while placing two on the second
team. William & Mary had four players on the two teams, while
Richmond and Virginia Tech had two selections each. George Mason
and Longwood rounded out the honorees with one from each school
honored on the second team.
