Maryland Advances Easily Past Marist
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The storied Maryland
women's lacrosse program picked up win No. 40 in NCAA Tournament
play as the top-seeded Terps routed Marist, 20-5, Saturday at
Ludwig Field.
Maryland (19-1) reaped the benefits of 10 different goal scorers,
led by five from sophomore Karri Ellen Johnson. The Annapolis, Md.,
native has now scored in all 42 games she has appeared in as a
Terp, a number that ranks as the third-longest streak in NCAA
Division I. Sarah Mollison and Amanda Spinnenweber added hat tricks
on the day while newly-crowned Atlantic Coast Conference Most
Valuable Player Caitlyn McFadden added two.
The Terps, who moved to 8-2 all-time in NCAA first round action,
outshot MAAC champion Marist, 29-6, en route to a commanding 11-2
lead through 30 minutes of play. Johnson completed a hat trick in
the first half and Spinnenweber added two goals to pace the
Terrapin attack. Maryland jumpstarted the game with four unanswered
goals and went on to outscore the Red Foxes 7-1 in the final 18
minutes of the period.
After two early Marist scores in the second stanza, the Terps moved
on to dominate the final 23 minutes, notching eight unanswered
scores before Marist's Kelly Condon notched one last Red Fox score
in the match's closing seconds.
Maryland, winner of seven-straight since tumbling at North Carolina
April 10, was a perfect 10-for-10 in clears while conversely
forcing 22 Red Fox turnovers. In a supreme redefending effort by
the Terp attack, Johnson notched a game-high four caused turnovers
while Mollison tallied three ground balls.
"I thought we really pulled it together in the second half and
ended the game the way we wanted to," head coach Cathy Reese, who
recently garnered her third ACC Coach of the Year honor in four
seasons, said. "I was really pleased with our redefending and that
really helped us create a lot of offensive opportunities."
Maryland's 46 shots was the fourth-highest shot output in NCAA
Women's Lacrosse Championship history while Marist's 11 shots are
tied for the fifth-fewest.
The Terps advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive
season and will face Penn next weekend at Ludwig Field.
