Florida Picks Good Time for Best Game
from press release
COLUMBUS, Ohio—The University of Florida
lacrosse team picked a good time to play their best game of the
season. Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) matched a school record with
six goals and the Gators beat No. 20 Johns Hopkins 14-3 in the
quarterfinals of the American Lacrosse Conference Tournament in
Columbus, Ohio.
The Gators earned their 10th win of the season, becoming just the
sixth Division I women’s lacrosse program to earn 10 wins in
their first season. Florida (10-7) advances to play No. 10
Vanderbilt (11-4) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the ALC Semifinals.
The Gators controlled the flow of play from the beginning, and had
a rock-solid effort from freshman goalie Cara Canington (Bel Air,
Md.). Canington faced 15 shots on goal and made a school-record 14
saves, allowing just one goal in over 57 minutes of action.
After a scoreless opening five minutes, Caroline Cochran
(Annapolis, Md.) got the Gators on the board first. Just 24 seconds
later, ALC Rookie of the Year Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.)
gave UF a 2-0 lead. Florida continued to pour it on with seven more
unanswered goals, including three by Cullen, to build a 9-0
lead.
Candace Rossi, who scored five goals in the first meeting between
the two teams, scored the Blue Jays lone goal of the first half,
but Jamie Reeg (Atlantis, Fla.) scored her second goal of the game
and her third of the season to put the Gators up 10-1 at the
break.
Cullen opened the second half with two more goals to build a 12-1
lead with 20 minutes to play. Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack,
N.Y.) and Bruns capped the scoring for Florida.
Danielle Ensley and Sam Schrum each scored for Johns Hopkins in the
final two minutes for the final 14-3 margin.
Cullen was perfect shooting on the day, scoring six goals on six
shots, and tied Bruns for the most goals in one game this season.
Bruns finished with three goals and leads the team with 47 on the
season.
Chesterman and Reeg each had two goals and Cochran scored one.
Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two assists and two ground
balls and Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.) had one assist, four
draw controls and one ground ball.
Earlier this season, Florida lost to Vanderbilt 12-7 in
Gainesville. The Commodores have not played since losing 27-9 at
Northwestern on April 24. The winner will advance to
Saturday’s championship game and face the winner of the first
semifinal between No. 2 Northwestern and Penn State.
