Dove, Gavin, Hogan Named Big East's Best
from press release
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The 2010 BIG EAST
women’s lacrosse championship began a weekend of postseason
action with a banquet announcing the league’s all-conference
teams and major award winners on at the Hyatt Regency in New
Brunswick, N.J. Two of the four major award winners took home
hardware for the second straight year as Syracuse senior Christina
Dove was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and Georgetown
head coach Ricky Fried was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year.
Both earned similar accolades last season. Loyola junior Grace
Gavin was tabbed the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year, while
Syracuse junior goalkeeper Liz Hogan was named the BIG EAST
Defensive Player of the Year. The league’s all-conference
teams also were announced and had five players earn unanimous first
team accolades.
Dove was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year for the second
straight season, becoming the first player in league history to win
the award in back-to-back years. The senior leads the Orange with
93 points and 58 goals. Earlier this season against Louisville,
Dove became Syracuse’s career leader in goals. She also is
the active Division I leader in career points and has registered a
point in 56 consecutive games. In conference play, Dove ranked
third in the BIG EAST with 38 points and 16 assists. She also ranks
second in all games with 12 free-position goals.
Fried earned his second consecutive BIG EAST Coach of the Year
honor in his sixth season with the Hoyas. He directed Georgetown to
an 11-5 mark during the regular season, including a perfect 8-0
record in conference play, as the Hoyas won their ninth
regular-season crown and earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST
Championship. It also was the seventh time in 10 years Georgetown
has gone unbeaten in BIG EAST play. GU is riding a league-best
eight-game winning streak. The Hoyas were ranked each week during
the year, despite facing arguably the toughest schedule in the
nation. Four of Georgetown’s first six games were against
teams ranked in the top six of the national polls. Overall, the
Hoyas played eight ranked teams during the regular season.
Gavin was named the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year after
totaling 82 points, including 62 goals and 20 assists. The junior
also helped her team clinch its first berth to the BIG EAST
Championship. In conference play, she had a league-best 46 points
and tied for the conference lead with 34 goals. Gavin averaged 5.75
points per game in conference action, more than any other BIG EAST
player. She also leads the league with five game-winning goals,
including three in conference play. The junior has 15 free-position
goals this year, tops of any BIG EAST player. Gavin scored at least
two goals in every game this season. She is the first Loyola player
to earn BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year honors and the
program’s first BIG EAST major award winner since Kate McHarg
was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year in 2006.
Hogan was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year after
leading the league with a scant 8.44 goals against average. The
junior goalkeeper allowed just 143 goals in over 1,000 minutes
played. She tallied 1,016 minutes, more than any other player in
the BIG EAST. She also leadsd the BIG EAST in save percentage
posting a .531 mark. In conference play, her figures got even
better as she lowered her goals against average to 7.01, and upped
her save percentage to .616. Both of those numbers led the league
as well. In 17 games, the SU defense held 11 opponents to 10 goals
or less. Hogan totaled 40 ground balls on the year as well. She was
named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on April 19 and
named to the honor roll three times. She is the second SU player to
earn BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors in the last three
years, as current teammate Lindsay Rogers earned the honor in
2008.
The 2010 BIG EAST women’s lacrosse championship is a
four-team event taking place May 6 and 8 at Rutgers’ Yurcak
Field in Piscataway, N.J. No 1 seed Georgetown (11-5, 8-0 BIG EAST)
will take on No. 4 seed Loyola (11-6, 5-3 BIG EAST) at 5:30 p.m. on

8:15 p.m. ET. The winners will face off for the league championship
and an automatic berth into the 16-team NCAA Division I
