Navy Wins First Patriot League Crown
Erin Rawlick scored three goals, while Danielle Vivonetto, Katrina
Nietsch and Caitlin Mandrin Hill added two apiece to lead the
Midshipmen to their first-ever Patriot League Championship with an
11-9 victory at No. 1 seed Lehigh on Sunday. With eight goals and
three assists for 11 points during the two-day tournament, Rawlick
was honored as the Tournament MVP. She is the leading scorer in the
NCAA with 105 points.
Two for Two in Play-Ins
The Patriot League Champion has participated in two NCAA Play-In
Games since the League introduced its postseason tournament in
2001, accumulating a record of 2-0. In 2006, Holy Cross defeated
MAAC Champion Le Moyne, 14-8, in Worcester with a spot in the NCAA
Tournament on the line. In 2008, the Patriot League Champion again
hosted the MAAC Title winner as Colgate edged Marist, 19-18, in
Hamilton, N.Y.
League Takes Four of Seven from???NEC
Teams from the Patriot League and the Northeast Conference met on
the field seven times during the 2010 regular season. Navy was
featured in two of those games, a 14-4 win over Robert Morris and a
17-5 victory over Monmouth. NEC???Champion Sacred Heart played one
Patriot League foe this season when it hosted Lafayette on April
14. Trailing at halftime, the Pioneers rallied to a 15-14 overtime
win over the Leopards. The Patriot League won the season series,
4-3, from the NEC and had winning records against the MAAC (6-2)
and the NLC (8-1) during the season.
Navy Invades Top 20
Navy became the first Patriot League team to make a Top 20 ranking
when it appeared at No. 20 in the deBeer/InsideLacrosse.com Media
Poll on Monday. The Mids had spent several weeks in the
“others receiving votes” category. Navy accumulated 10
points for the 20th spot, just ahead of the nine points accumulated
by Johns Hopkins. The three teams ahead of Navy in the poll all
played Patriot League teams earlier this season. No. 17 Albany
posted a 1-1 record against the League by beating Colgate and
losing to Lehigh, while 18th-ranked Boston College and No. 19
Denver posted wins over Holy Cross. Maryland (17-1) claimed the top
spot in Monday’s poll with 236 points and eight first-place
votes.
Seeking Postseason Success
Since League play began in 1991, teams have advanced to the
postseason a total of 17 times. Lafayette was the League’s
first representative in the NCAA Tournament in 1991, where the
Leopards lost 11-9 to Penn State in Easton, Pa. The League sent
teams to the ECAC Tournament five times during the 1990s, notching
a record of 1-6. Lehigh picked up the sole victory in 1996 with an
11-8 win over Rutgers before falling to eventual ECAC Champion
Harvard. The League is 3-15 all-time in postseason play and 0-9 in
the NCAA Tournament.
Rawlick Moves Up Record Books
Following Sunday’s championship victory over Lehigh, Navy
senior Erin Rawlick has scored 72 goals and added 33 assists for
105 points over 19 games this season. Her goal and point outputs
are career bests, while her 33 assists are four shy of the 37 she
notched in 2009. Rawlick sits third in League annals in assists
(94) and points (288), while she is fourth in goals (194). Her 105
points this season are tied for second all-time in the League
record book with Colgate’s Shari Krasnoo, who first
accomplished the feat in 1991. Rawlick is 14 points behind
Lehigh’s Jill Altschuler, who holds the top mark for points
in a season with 119. That record dates back to 1996.
