UMBC Women Book AE Playoff Berth

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Junior Ashley Stodter poured in
four goals to lead the UMBC's women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 win
over Binghamton University in America East action on Saturday
afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the win, UMBC
clinched a trip to the four-team America East Championships for the
first time since 2006.
Binghamton looked prepared to run away with the game, jumping out
to a 5-0 lead with 19:03 to go in the first half. UMBC answered
with a 4-0 run before junior attack Ali Castiglie found the back of
the net at the 5:10 mark to take a 6-4 lead. Junior Beth Moore
would score her third of the game a little over a minute later to
give the Bearcats a 7-4 lead with less than four minutes left in
the first half. However, junior Amanda Pappas took the ball from
the opposite end of the field to score with only eight seconds on
the clock to give the Bearcats only a 7-5 lead at the half.
In the second period, it was all UMBC. The Retrievers scored five
goals in a row, and scored 14 of the 16 goals in the second half to
claim the victory.
Binghamton was led by Castiglie with four points off a pair of
goals and assists. Moore scored three goals and freshman attack
Kimberly McGeever, red-shirt junior Lizzie Wright, freshman Allie
Sabitus and freshmen Kristin Stone each scored once. McGeever also
added two assists.
The Retrievers held the edge in shots (30-21) and only committed 9
turnovers compared to the Bearcat's 11.
Senior Erika Travis was honored before the game as a graduating
senior. She was a four year contributor to the women's lacrosse
team at Binghamton. As a senior captain, she anchored the defense,
starting all fifteen games. For her career, Erika has appeared in
61 games which is good for fourth on the Bearcat's All-Time top-ten
list. She has also scored 16 goals, added 7 assists, picked up 38
ground balls, 18 draw controls and caused 17 turn-overs in her time
at Binghamton. As a dean's list student-athlete, she is graduating
with a degree in Human Development, and is planning to attend
graduate school next year to start a master's in Exercise
Physiology. She will also be completing a graduate assistantship
teaching anatomy and physiology
Castilie for Binghamton and Ashley Stodter for UMBC were named the
America East Players of the Game.
