Top Seed Longwood Advances to NLC Title Game

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University
women’s lacrosse team advanced to the National Lacrosse
Conference (NLC) tournament championship game with an 18-6 victory
over the University of Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at the
Athletics Complex in Farmville. Junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md.
(Queen Anne’s) led Longwood with five goals and three assists
as the Lancers jumped out to an 11-3 lead at halftime. The Lancers
wrap up the season on Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m. when they face the
winner of the Davidson College and Jacksonville University game at
the Athletics Complex in Farmville for the NLC tournament
championship.
Dean put the Lancers on the board with 25:43 remaining in the
first half to give Longwood the early 1-0 lead. Detroit answered
less than a minute later to tie the game before senior Page
Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) and junior Morgan
Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) scored back-to-back goals to put
Longwood ahead 3-1 with 22:19 remaining. Detroit countered with a
goal before the Lancers went on an 8-1 run over the final 14:33 to
take an 11-3 lead in to halftime.
Longwood scored four goals in the first 17:05 of the second half.
Detroit scored a pair of goals before the Lancers scored three more
goals in 2:30 to take an 18-5 lead with 5:19 remaining in the game.
The Titans scored one goal in the final minute to make the final
score 18-6.
The?Lancers were led by Dean with five goals and three assists for
eight points. Illian added two goals with two assists with three
draw controls. Junior Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop
O’Connell) and sophomore Jess Rudloff/West Chester, Pa. (West
Chester East) each scored a pair of goals. Junior Karli
Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) scored one goal with five
draw controls and two ground balls. Junior Juli Liebig/Centreville,
Md. (Queen Anne’s) was credited with three saves and three
goals allowed in the first 30 minutes while senior Eliza
Coughter/Charlottesville?(Charlottesville) allowed three goals with
one save in the second half.
Detroit’s Emily Boissonneault, Corina Mahorn and Zaynib
Hamze each scored two goals for the Titans. Boissonneault and
Mahorn each had a team-high three draw controls while Boissonneault
had two caused turnovers. Marybeth Flanagan allowed 18 goals with
19 saves in 60 minutes in goal.
Longwood outshot Detroit 50-16 and had a 28-11 advantage in ground
balls. The Lancers only turned the ball over 10 times while forcing
19 Detroit miscues.
