No. 1 Maryland Handles A-10 Champ UMass

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Nine different players
accounted for 14 Terrapin goals Saturday as No. 1 Maryland downed
A-10 champion UMass, 14-4, at Ludwig Field.
The Terps (17-1) were led in scoring by two goals each from Sarah
Mollison, Karri Ellen Johnson, Laura Merrifield, Kate Faas and Alex
Aust. Mollison added a pair of assists for a game-high four
points.
Maryland, which erupted for seven unanswered goals to start the
match, began the first period with goals coming via the Jones
sisters as Brandi netted the game's first score at 25:56 and
Brittany utilized a Mollison assist at 19:41 for a 2-0 Terp lead.
Merrifield tacked on a free position score with 15 minutes
remaining in the half before unassisted goals by Johnson, Mollison,
Caitlyn McFadden and Faas extended Maryland's lead to 7-0.
UMass finally got on the board with 8:52 remaining as Jesse
O'Donnell capitalized on a free position opportunity. Maryland
outshot the Minutewomen a commanding 18-6 through the first 30
minutes of play.
The Terps kicked off the second stanza much as they did the first,
notching a 4-0 run courtesy of goals from Merrifield, Amanda
Spinnenweber, Johnson and Aust. Aust's tally at 18:05 off an assist
from fellow freshman Katie Schwarzmann moved the game to 11-1 and
kept the clock running until Danielle Pelletier cut the Terrapin
lead back to nine a minute later. Maryland went on to outscore
UMass 3-2 to close out the match and secure its 17th win of the
2010 campaign.
"We played well overall and showed a lot of good hustle," head
coach Cathy Reese said. "We got to see a lot of good looks from all
of our players today and it was especially nice to see some of our
younger players get chances to contribute."
Three of UMass's goal came via free position shots as Maryland held
its foe to 10 or fewer goals for the 15th time this season.
Brittany Dipper picked up the win in the cage while making four
saves in 30 minutes of work. McFadden added a game-high three
caused turnovers while senior defender Karissa Taylor tallied two
caused turnovers and two ground balls while holding A-10 Player of
the Year Jackie Lyons scoreless.
Maryland returns to action for Senior Day next Saturday as it plays host to No. 11 Dartmouth at noon.
