No. 20 William & Mary Cruises Past ODU in Finale

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The 20th-ranked William
and Mary lacrosse team utilized a 9-0 first half run to earn a
convincing 18-7 victory against Old Dominion in both teams’
regular-season finale on Wednesday evening at Albert-Daly Field.
Having qualified for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament,
W&M (10-7, 4-3) will square off against top-seeded James
Madison in the opening round of action next Thursday in
Harrisonburg, Va.
In addition to the 9-0 run in the opening half, the College also
rattled off seven unanswered scores in the second stanza as the
final 14:01 was played with a running clock.
Led by junior Ashley Holofcener’s four goals, eight different
Tribe players found the back of the cage. Senior Mary Zulty and
freshman Kyrstin Mackrides recorded hat tricks with three goals
apiece, while senior Katie Rees, junior Grace Golden and freshman
Caitlin Murphy all scored twice. Golden’s impressive stat
line also included an assist, five draw controls, five ground balls
and two caused turnovers. Additionally, the Manhasset, N.Y., native
passed Colleen Dalon (’06) for second place on the
program’s all-time goals list with 133.
Junior goalkeeper Emily Geary posted one of her best performances
of the year by allowing a season-low seven goals while totaling
nine saves.
As a team, the Tribe held a 16-10 advantage in draw controls and a
26-18 margin in ground balls.
While neither squad was able to score during the opening 10 minutes
of play, ODU (3-12, 1-6) got on the board first when Sarah Wright
found the back of the cage with 19:47 showing. However, W&M
responded with nine unanswered goals during the next 12:28 to break
the game open. Holofcener, Zulty and Rees all provided a pair of
scores during the important stretch, while Murphy added a goal and
an assist.
Although the Lady Monarchs tallied back-to-back goals late in the
half to get within six, 9-3, Mackrides registered a score at the
2:07 mark to push the Tribe’s lead back to seven by
halftime.
The College dominated the draws in the opening 30 minutes of play
and held a 10-4 advantage in the category.
While Old Dominion scored a pair of goals during the first five
minutes of the second half to cut the margin to 10-5, the Tribe put
the game away with a 7-0 run that lasted nearly 12 minutes.
Holofcener scored twice during the stretch, while Mackrides added
two goals and an assist. Playing in the final home game of her
career, senior Katie Delaney punctuated the run with a goal with
8:40 remaining.
ODU was unable to get closer than 11 the rest of the way, as the
Tribe cruised to its third consecutive double-digit victory against
the Lady Monarchs.
