Kaestner Caps Georgetown Comeback in Double OT

WASHINGTON, D.C – The 12th-ranked
Georgetown Hoyas rallied to beat the 13th-ranked Loyola Greyhounds,
13-12 Wednesday night at the Hoyas’ Multi-Sport Field on a
golden-goal by the Hoyas’ Abby Kaestner. The score came
with 1:06 left in the first sudden death overtime session.
Loyola got four points each by Grace Gavin (3g, 1a), Mary
Heneberry (4a) and Caroline Hager (2g, 2a), while Abby Rehfuss
scored three goals.
The Hoyas were led by Jordy Kirr who scored five points on four
goals and an assist.
Georgetown stalled for much of the first half of overtime,
attempting the first shot with 20 seconds left, but Bunny
O’Reilly found the back of the net, giving the Hoyas its
first lead at 12-11.
Loyola got a free position shot with 30 seconds left in the first
half of the extra session, but the shot was saved Caitlin
Formby.
With Georgetown celebrating a bit too early, the Hoyas were called
for too many men on the field and the officials granted Loyola six
seconds on the clock. Helen McCutcheon then scored off a pass
from Heneberry with 4.2 left in the overtime session, sending the
game to sudden death.
The Greyhounds got on the board first just over a minute and a
half in as Grace Gavin fed Caroline Hager from the back of the
goal.
Loyola opened a 2-0 lead with 26:47 remaining as Mary Heneberry
wrapped around the goal and fed Abby Rehfuss in front of the
goal.
Grace Gavin scored to put Loyola on top, 3-0, with 24:52 left as
she was left one-on-one with the keeper.
Georgetown cut the lead to 3-1 with 20:48 remaining on a
free-position shot by Jordyn Kirr, beating Loyola goalkeeper Kerry
Stoothoff on the lower left corner.
Emily Gibson upped the lead back to three at 4-1 as Hager fed her
from the back of the goal and Gibson quick-sticked it for the score
with 18:18 left.
Molly Ford scored one-on-one with the keeper at 14:45, beating
Stoothoff in the lower right corner, cutting the Greyhounds lead to
4-2.
Kirr then scored her second goal of the game on a free-position at
13:28, as Loyola remained ahead at 4-3.
Hager extended the lead back to two at 5-3 with 12:22 left as
Heneberry found Hager in front of the goal.
Twenty-seven seconds later, Gavin recorded her second goal of the
game as she beat Georgetown goalkeeper Caitlin Formby in the upper
right corner, forcing the Hoyas to call a timeout.
After several possessions by both teams without a score,
Georgetown cut the lead to 6-4 with just under three minutes
remaining as Jacqueline Giles beat Stoothoff.
A long pass from Cara Filippelli to Rehfuss helped Loyola send the
lead back to three with 1:44 to go in the first session and Loyola
went into the locker room with a 7-4 lead.
Loyola kept up the pressure as the first half began as Heneberry
found Rehfuss wide open in front of the net on the right, giving
the Hounds it largest lead so far at 8-4.
The Greyhounds extended the lead to five at 9-4 as Hager found
Filippelli for another score with just under 22 minutes remaining
in the game.
Meg Decker then gave Loyola a six-goal lead at 10-4 with 21:11 to
go as she weaved through the defense and fired a shot from the
eight-meter circle.
With 17:24 remaining in the second half, Gavin then recorded her
14th hat trick of the season, putting Loyola on top, 11-4.
Kirr then recorded a hat trick for the Hoyas on a free-position
with 16:01 left to play, cutting the Greyhounds lead to six at
11-5. Thirty seconds later, Kirr scored again, cutting
Loyola’s lead to five.
Georgetown scored its third straight goal with 14:29 left on
another free-position by Kelsi Bozel, prompting head coach Jen
Adams to call a timeout with Loyola leading, 11-7.
Nine seconds later, the Hoyas got a breakaway off the draw as
Molly Ford scored from the left side, cutting the lead to 11-8.
The Hoyas scored once again with 12:09 remaining on a score by
Kaestner as Loyola clinged to a two-goal lead at 11-9.
On another free-position Kaestner scored once again, cutting the
lead to one with 4:20 left.
With 1:19 remaining, Georgetown tied the game on a goal by Sophia
Thomas off a pass from Kirr.
With 26 seconds left, deep in the Loyola offensive end, Gavin
recorded her second yellow card of the game, the sixth of the game
for the Greyhounds. Rehfuss got her second yellow with 10:30
left in the second half.
The Hoyas outshot the Greyhounds, 32-23 and 19-10 after the first
half. Georgetown also outdrew Loyola, 19-9, including all
four draws in overtime.
