from press release

FAIRFIELD, Conn.
- The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team captured its third consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League regular season crown with a 2-0 weekend and Brittany Bare and Katie Keenan played a large role in those victories. As a result, Bare was named the MAAC Lacrosse League Defensive Player of the Week and Keenan was named the Rookie of the Week.

Bare is only the second Stag this season to be named the Defensive Player of the Week, and earns the award for the first time in her career. The junior, a graduate of William Mason High School, led the Stags with nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers in the 2-0 week. She caused a career-high five turnovers in the win over Siena, two days after picking up a career-high seven ground balls at Marist. Bare also had three goals in the two games, including the game-winner against Siena, as well as four draw controls and an assist.

Bare has started all 16 games for the Stags this season and has picked up a team-best 42 ground balls. Her 2.63 ground balls a game has her third in the MAAC and 32nd in the nation. She also ranks 29th in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game, at 1.75, with 28 on the year - second on the team. Bare has also touched net 19 times, with three assists, and is sixth on the Stags roster with 22 points

Keenan earns her first weekly accolade and gives the Stags their seventh rookie honor of the 10-week spring season. A graduate of Wantagh High School, Keenan made 23 saves in wins over Marist and Siena, reaching double digits in each contest and finishing the week with a .561 save percentage. She allowed just 18 goals in the 120 minutes, for a GAA of 9.00. Keenan made 12 saves against Marist, and had 11 saves against Siena, while allowing nine goals in each game.

Keenan ranks first in the MAAC through the end of the regular season with a 10.17 GAA, which is also good for 34th in the nation. Her .449 save percentage on the year, second in the league, is 40th in the nation through April 25. She has made 122 saves this season, the ninth most in a single-season in program history.

Fairfield completed the regular season with a 12-4 overall mark and a perfect 6-0 record in league play. The Stags have now won 18 consecutive MAAC regular season games, four shy of the league record held by the Stags (2000-04).

The Stags will begin their defense of its 2009 MAAC Tournament Title on Friday when they take on the number-four seed Siena. The conference championship is being hosted by Marist, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The third-seeded Red Foxes will take on the number-two seed Canisius in the other semifinal, with the winners meeting on Sunday at 1 p.m. The conference champion earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 15.
