Patriot League Notebook
Not a Dull Moment on Saturday
The final regular season weekend in the Patriot League featured
three contests that all had crucial postseason ramifications. There
was something important on the line in all three League games,
which made for an interesting and exciting day from start to
finish.
Holy Cross Rallies for Fourth Seed
Saturday's first contest featured two teams battling for their
playoff lives. American had jumped out to a 3-1 mark in League play
and needed a victory over Navy on April 7 to clinch a postseason
berth. The Eagles fell 15-14 to the Mids and dropped to 3-2, but
still held their playoff destiny in their hands. Meanwhile, Holy
Cross dropped three of its first four League games and faced a
must-win against Lafayette to stay in the hunt for the playoffs. A
13-4 victory for the Crusaders over the Leopards set the stage for
Saturday's win-or-go-home finale. Thanks to a five-goal, six-point
effort from Kat Sutton, Holy Cross held off American for a 16-11
win in Worcester to secure the last remaining bid to the Patriot
League Tournament. The field was complete, and the only questions
remaining surrounded seeding.
Navy Wins, Puts Pressure on Lehigh
Navy entertained Bucknell for a 3 p.m. start in Annapolis on Senior
Day. The Mids did not disappoint their fans as Erin Rawlick scored
three consecutive goals to start the game and tallied six overall
as Navy cruised to a 24-4 victory. Rawlick collected an Academy and
Patriot League record 11 draw controls, while Caitlin Mandrin Hill
had a career day with four goals and four assists. The win moved
Navy to 5-1 in League play and earned them at least a share of the
Patriot League regular season title. The Mids then waited anxiously
for the result of the Lehigh-Colgate game, needing the Mountain
Hawks to lose in order to claim the regular season crown outright
and earn the top seed and hosting duties for the League
tournament.
Mountain Hawks Erase Early Deficit to Clinch Top Seed
Early on, it looked as though Navy might get its wish. Colgate
jumped out to a 4-1 first-half lead on the Mountain Hawks with Kate
Bergstram scoring two of her team-high four goals on the night.
Alison Thomas and Lauren Dykstra found the net to get Lehigh to
within 4-3. Courtney Miller scored the first of her two goals on
the game to make it 5-3, but the Mountain Hawks rattled off six of
the next seven to take a 9-6 halftime lead. Lehigh extended its
lead to four three times in the second half, and the Raiders were
never able to get closer than two. Dykstra led all players with six
goals and has 51 on the season.
Lehigh Hosts Tournament for First Time
The Mountain Hawks are serving as the host of the Patriot League
Tournament for the first time since the format was introduced in
2001. The top seed has captured the League crown in every
tournament except one – 2008 when American lost to Colgate in
the championship game.

Team Notebooks
American Paige Lin scored four goals and added an assist in the
Eagles' 16-11 season-ending loss at Holy Cross. She went 2-for-3 on
free-position shots. Emily Stankiewicz added three goals and Amanda
Makoid notched two, but Lauren Schoenberger was held without a
point. Frankie Solomon and Kaska Kominski split time in net, with
Solomon suffering the loss. The loss capped off a disappointing
season for the Eagles, who were 3-1 after four games in Patriot
League play, but dropped their last two to Navy and the Crusaders
to lose out on a playoff berth. After making the tournament seven
straight years since first beginning Patriot League play in 2002,
the Eagles have now missed the postseason two consecutive
seasons.
Bucknell The Bison defense could not stop Navy's attack on Saturday
in suffering a 24-4 loss in their last game of the season. Senior
Carol Donohue finished her career with an assist, which added to
her lead in the all-time assists and points categories in
Lewisburg. Chelsea Peters and Julia Braun notched goals for the
Bison, while promising freshmen Paige Cobbs and Ryan Wenk each
tallied a goal off the bench. Goalie Alyssa DeLorenz was peppered
with 31 shots, 29 of which were on goal. The Bison finish the
season 2-15 and 0-6 against League teams. It marks the first time
Bucknell has completed a season without a League win since
1994.
Colgate Kate Bergstrom scored a career-best four goals and
registered an assist in the Raiders' 15-12 home loss to Lehigh.
Colgate will compete as the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League
Tournament and draws No. 2 Navy in its semifinal match. The Raiders
have qualified for each of the 10 League tournaments held since
2001, but this year marks the first time they enter as the third
seed. Meghan Lawler, Courtney Miller and Colleen Bubnack each
notched multiple-point games, while Christina Roa recorded 10 saves
in net.
Holy Cross The Crusaders are back in the Patriot League Tournament
for the first time since their back-to-back titles in 2006-07. In
addition to Kat Sutton's five goals and six points against
American, Katie Gardner netted a hat trick and Megan Fenton, Maddie
Carrellas and Ali Baird each scored twice. Amy Martin played a
little over 59 minutes in goal, making 12 saves and picking up the
victory. At 6-10, the Crusaders are the first under-.500 team to
make the tournament since an 8-10 American squad did it in 2008. As
the fourth seed, the Crusaders will take on top-seeded and
tournament host Lehigh on Friday in the second semifinal in the
first postseason matchup between the teams.
Lafayette The Leopards were stifled in their final regular season
game in losing 16-4 at Longwood. Karli Brentlinger scored seven
times, including twice in a game-opening 7-1 spurt, and three other
Longwood players registered multiple-goal games. Ana Drehwing led
Lafayette with two goals, while her sister Maria added one in her
final game in a Lafayette uniform. The Leopards close the season
3-14 and 1-5 in League play.
Lehigh The Mountain Hawks used a five-goal spurt in the first half
to help erase a 4-1 deficit in their 15-12 win over Colgate in
Hamilton. Lauren Dykstra scored six goals, including four in the
first 30 minutes to secure a 9-6 halftime lead. Inneka Carmola
scored her three goals of the game in back-to-back-to-back fashion,
including two 14 seconds apart. Leigh Ann Torcivia collected four
ground balls and four draw controls. The Mountain Hawks will host
the League tournament for the first time in school history and will
play Holy Cross on Friday in the day's second semifinal.
Navy The Midshipmen overwhelmed Bucknell early en route to their
24-4 win on Saturday in Annapolis. Erin Rawlick tallied the game's
first three goals en route to her game-high six and Caitlin Mandrin
Hill set a career-best with four goals and four assists for eight
points. Danielle Vivonetto scored four times to finish the regular
season with 54 tallies, while Rawlick leads the country with 64.
Rawlick also broke the Navy and Patriot League records by
collecting 11 draw controls. The Mids clinched a piece of the
regular season crown for the first time in program history and have
qualified for the postseason tournament in each of their three
years in the League. Navy takes on Colgate at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
