Towson Women Secure No. 2 Seed in CAAs

from press release

TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Teeters made 14 saves, including a point-blank stop with 52 seconds remaining, as the 10th-ranked Tigers (12-3, 6-1) rallied from a one-goal half-time deficit to win their fifth straight game, a 9-7 Colonial Athletic Association victory over 16th-ranked Hofstra University (10-5, 4-2) at Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Tigers secured the second seed in the CAA Tournament, which will be held at James Madison University on May 6 and 8. The Dukes earned the CAA’s regular season title after a 17-7 victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Pride will be the third seed in the CAA Tournament while William & Mary earned the fourth seed.

“It feels great to send the seniors out with a win today,” Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. “They have done a great job all year, especially against tough teams like Hofstra. It was just a battle today and the girls did a good job of staying focused.

“The seniors have stepped up all year, especially on the offensive end,” Coach Doherty added. “I didn’t expect anything less today because they have been doing it all season.”

After falling behind by a 6-4 deficit early in the second half, the Tigers rallied by scoring three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead with 9:35 remaining in regulation. Junior attacker Jess Dunn scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 6-6 before senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored on a free position shot with 9:35 remaining in the second half, giving Towson a one-goal advantage.

However, the Pride answered just 28 seconds later when senior midfielder Corrine Gandolfi scored an unassisted goal past Teeters to tie the game.

With 4:47 remaining, senior midfielder Nikki Marcinik gave Towson an 8-7 advantage with her 23rd goal of the season, an unassisted marker past senior goalkeeper Mary Cuddihy.

The Pride had a pair of chances in the final four minutes to tie the game, but Teeters made a pair of saves, including a point-blank stop of an attempt by senior midfielder Sandy Wasserbach with 52 seconds remaining, to preserve the lead.

“Mary always plays her best when the game is on the line,” Coach Doherty said. “She made a couple of big saves on the weak side which kept us in the game.”

The Tigers added an insurance goal with ten seconds remaining when sophomore midfielder Katie Cloud scored off an assist from senior attacker Jacie Kendall.

Led by two goals from Fratzke, the Tigers built a 3-0 lead in the opening 17 minutes of the game. But, the Pride countered by scoring five straight goals to take a 5-3 lead with 4:58 remaining in the first half. Gandolfi scored a goal with an assist in the run.

With 1:31 remaining in the first half, Kendall scored off an assist from Marcinik to narrow the Tigers’ deficit to 5-4 at the intermission.

While Teeters made 14 saves to lead the Tigers, Fratzke added three goals for her 11th “hat trick” of the season. Kendall, who scored two goals with two assists, became the 21st player in school history to record 100 career points with an assist in the first half.

Gandolfi scored two goals with an assist in a losing effort for Hofstra while Wasserbach contributed a goal with an assist. Cuddihy made a career-high 12 saves for the Pride.

The Pride outshot the Tigers by a 28-24 margin and had a commanding 13-5 advantage in draw controls.

The Tigers will finish the regular season on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Temple University for a 3 p.m. non-conference game against the Owls. Meanwhile, the Pride will travel to Drexel on Thursday afternoon to face the Dragons in the regular season finale for both teams.
