JMU Thumps W&M, Will Host CAA Tournament

from press release

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The ninth-ranked James Madison women's lacrosse team clinched the number one seed the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament with a 17-7 home win over No. 19 William and Mary Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

The Dukes won their sixth straight game and upped their overall record to 13-2 and their CAA mark to 6-0.  With one final regular-season game remaining at home against George Mason on April 29, the worst JMU can finish is tied for first with Towson with 6-1 records.  The Dukes' regular-season win over the Tigers gives JMU the tie-breaker and the top seed.

As the number one seed JMI will host the upcoming CAA Tournament.  The CAA semifinals are scheduled for May 6 and the championship for May 8.  JMU will face fourth-seeded William and Mary in one semifinal, while number two seed Towson will meet number three Hofstra in the other semifinal.

JMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Tribe in the game's opening 10 minutes.  Sophomore Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy) and junior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) each scored two of the Dukes' first four goals, and Lomady had an assist on the second of McHugh's scores.

Tribe senior Mary Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) got her team on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 18:45, but McHugh then scored again to start a run of four straight JMU goals that gave the Dukes a 9-1 advantage with 12:30 remaining.

The Dukes led 10-2 at intermission, and W&M opened the second half with a goal by senior Katie Rees (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) off a pass from Zulty, to cut the JMU lead to 10-3.  However, JMU scored six unanswered goals to build what proved to be an insurmountable 16-3 lead with 19:04 to go.

McHugh was the Dukes' top scorer with four goals, and sophomore Alex Napoli (Highland, Md./River Hill) contributed three goals and two assists.  Sophomore Ariel Lane (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) also scored three times.  Other multiple-goal scorers were redshirt senior Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and Lomady, each with two.

Zulty led W&M with three goals and also had two assists, and Rees scored twice.

JMU senior goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) finished with seven saves, and Tribe junior goalkeeper Emily Geary (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) had eight stops.
