JMU Thumps W&M, Will Host CAA Tournament

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The ninth-ranked James
Madison women's lacrosse team clinched the number one seed the
upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament with a 17-7 home
win over No. 19 William and Mary Sunday afternoon at the JMU
Lacrosse Complex.
The Dukes won their sixth straight game and upped their overall
record to 13-2 and their CAA mark to 6-0. With one final
regular-season game remaining at home against George Mason on April
29, the worst JMU can finish is tied for first with Towson with 6-1
records. The Dukes' regular-season win over the Tigers gives
JMU the tie-breaker and the top seed.
As the number one seed JMI will host the upcoming CAA
Tournament. The CAA semifinals are scheduled for May 6 and
the championship for May 8. JMU will face fourth-seeded
William and Mary in one semifinal, while number two seed Towson
will meet number three Hofstra in the other semifinal.
JMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Tribe in the game's opening
10 minutes. Sophomore Caitlin McHugh (Westminster, Md./Mercy)
and junior Mary Kate Lomady (Abington, Pa./Abington) each scored
two of the Dukes' first four goals, and Lomady had an assist on the
second of McHugh's scores.
Tribe senior Mary Zulty (Jarrettsville, Md./John Carroll) got her
team on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 18:45, but McHugh
then scored again to start a run of four straight JMU goals that
gave the Dukes a 9-1 advantage with 12:30 remaining.
The Dukes led 10-2 at intermission, and W&M opened the second
half with a goal by senior Katie Rees (Catonsville,
Md./Catonsville) off a pass from Zulty, to cut the JMU lead to
10-3. However, JMU scored six unanswered goals to build what
proved to be an insurmountable 16-3 lead with 19:04 to go.
McHugh was the Dukes' top scorer with four goals, and sophomore
Alex Napoli (Highland, Md./River Hill) contributed three goals and
two assists. Sophomore Ariel Lane (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero
Beach) also scored three times. Other multiple-goal scorers
were redshirt senior Kim Griffin (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford)
and Lomady, each with two.
Zulty led W&M with three goals and also had two assists, and
Rees scored twice.
JMU senior goalkeeper Morgan Kelly (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's)
finished with seven saves, and Tribe junior goalkeeper Emily Geary
(Wayne, Pa./Radnor) had eight stops.
