Freshman Lifts UConn over Cincy in OT

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Freshman Chelsea Hauswirth
(Crownsville, Md.) netted the gamewinner in the University of
Connecticut lacrosse team's 12-11 overtime victory over Cincinnati
on Sunday. Off a pass from senior Katie Devaney (Fayetteville,
N.Y.), Hauswirth guided the Huskies to their second BIG EAST
victory of the season. Redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson,
Ohio) was one of two UConn players to finish the game with a hat
trick and one of four to finish the game with three points.
Mitchelides opened scoring less than five minutes in the game,
spurring a five-goal run by the Huskies with junior Jillian Cerar
(Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Mitchelides each scoring twice. Freshman
Jordan Christopher (Downingtown, Pa.) also scored in the run before
the Bearcats came back to close the first half with a three-goal
spurt to bring Cincinnati within two goals at the break.
Katie Kriazoglou and Ali Mattingly continued the Cincinnati
offensive run into the second half before Devaney broke it up to
regain a 7-5 Connecticut edge at 23:20. Devaney scored off a pass
from Hauswirth before tacking on the assist to Mitchelides' third
goal of the contest.
The Bearcats countered with a pair to tie the game for the first
time at 12:51. Redshirt junior Lauren Sparks (West Chester, Pa.)
broke the tie and regained the lead with an unassisted goal at
11:18.
Cincinnati scored twice to take a 9-8 lead with just under five
minutes remaining regulation. Sparks, Cerar and freshman Morgan
O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y.) all scored as less than two minutes
expired. The Huskies led 11-9 with 3:19 on the clock.
Sparks and Cerar both finished the game three points while Cerar
recorded a hat trick for the second-consecutive game.
Maddie Gink brought the Bearcats within one, capitalizing on a
free-position shot with 2:34 remaining in regulation. Cincinnati
tied it with an unassisted goal with 57 seconds on the clock.
At 1:10 in the first overtime, Hauswirth scored the off a pass from
Devaney to claim a 12-11 BIG EAST victory for the Huskies.
UConn had six assists on 12 goals with sophomore Kiersten Tupper
(Camillus, N.Y.) and Devaney leading the way with two helpers
each.
A pair of freshman led the team in draw controls with Hauswirth and
O'Reilly each winning four, leading the Huskies to a 18-9 advantage
over the Bearcats in draws.
Senior Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) made 10 saves and
picked up three ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. She
was not the only one as Sparks also forced a pair of Bearcat
miscues and collected three ground balls.
The Huskies (9-7, 2-4) host Notre Dame in their final regular
season game at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on Saturday
at noon. Prior to the start of the BIG EAST contest, the members of
UConn's graduating class will be honored.
Game Notes
• With 10 saves against the Bearcats, senior Jenna Moulton
matched her season-high save effort for the third time this season
and first time against a BIG EAST opponent.
• Before Sunday's game at Cincinnati, junior Jillian Cerar had
not scored a free-position goal since the Feb. 28, 2010 game
against Canisius.
• Ashley Mitchelides has scored two or more goals in
three-consecutive games and has done so in 10 games this season.
