Delaware Edges Drexel in Ciarroca's Final Game
from press release
NEWARK, Del. -- Three University of Delaware
women’s lacrosse seniors said farewell to the Blue Hen
program in true rivalry fashion as UD used a late game run to
defeat Drexel University, 12-11, in Colonial Athletic Association
action at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware (6-10 overall, 3-4 CAA) and Drexel (10-6 overall, 3-3 CAA)
went goal-for-goal in the first half and entered intermission
deadlocked at 5-5. Despite UD scoring the first of the half, Drexel
went on to tally four consecutive for a three-goal cushion.
Delaware notched the victory over its local CAA foe as the Hens
recorded five of the game’s final six scores.
Sixth-year head coach Kim Ciarrocca, who announced her retirement
prior to the 2010 season, coached her final Delaware game and
improved to 51-50 at the helm of the Hens with the victory.
Seniors Courtney Aburn (top right), Morgan Marino and Emily
Schaknowski wrapped up their collegiate careers with a combined
record of 38-30 over the past four seasons, which included three
consecutive victories over Drexel. The Hens improved to 22-4 over
the Dragons with their third 12-11 victory of 2010.
Aburn scored a season-high four goals, the third four-goal
performance of her career, and added an assist to lead Delaware to
victory. Junior Julianna Jeffers (bottom left) also added four
scores and recorded a commanding seven draw controls to
Delaware’s statistics. Marino and junior Ali Libertini
recorded a game-high two assists.
Senior Katie Lawson led Drexel with four scores as senior Becca
Drylie-Perkins netted three.
Drexel managed to outshoot the Hens, 30-21, though freshman
redshirt Dana Mazzarella improved to 3-3 on the season as she
stopped 12 shots in goal for UD. Junior Whitney Johnson made just
two saves in 35:50 of action for the Dragons and senior Rachael
Behrndt stopped three for the visiting squad. Each of the DU
keepers allowed six goals.
Aburn kicked off the day’s scoring just 32 seconds into the
Hens’ season finale on a free position shot following Jeffers
winning the first draw control of the contest. The Dragons knotted
the game at 1-1 at 27:40 as Drylie-Perkens went unassisted in
scoring.
At the 27-minute mark, Aburn went on to feed Jeffers for a 2-1 lead
before Lawson brought the game to 2-2 at 20:27. Drylie-Perkins
scored the second of the Dragons’ six free position goals
moments later to award DU its first lead of the game.
After three scoreless minutes of action, Libertini found freshman
Brittany Griel for her fifth score of the season to bring the game
to three-all. Delaware backed it with another point as the tandem
of Marino and Aburn went to work. Marino passed to Aburn for a 4-3
lead at 10:48.
Drexel answered with a pair of its own by Lawson and Drylie-Perkins
on free position shots within a minute of one another, but it was a
man-down goal by Libertini, Delaware’s second free position
goal of the half, that sent the game to intermission at 5-5.
Junior Corinne Drost opened the second stint with the game’s
fourth consecutive free position goal to ensure an early
second-half Delaware lead, 6-5. Drexel, however, went on to score
four back-to-back goals, two unassisted and two on free position
opportunities, to take a commanding 9-6 advantage at the 15:42
mark.
Junior Holly Burman broke the Dragons’ run with a UD score on
a Libertini assist at 14:49, but Drexel’s Katie Blazer
reinstated the three-goal gap just nine seconds later.
Delaware then turned the tables with three straight scores and five
of the final six good for the win.
Jeffers netted two and Aburn added another to help the Hens tie the
game at 10-10, the seventh stalemate of the contest. Lawson scored
the Dragons’ final goal at 7:46 to take an 11-10 lead, before
UD scored at 5:50 and 2:51 to finalize all scoring at 12-11.
Aburn used a Marino feed to tie the game for the eighth and final
time at 11-11 before Jeffers put the game away with her second
game-winner of the season. Drexel cleared the ball into Blue Hen
territory with seconds lingering on the clock, but ran short of
time as the Dragons’ shot was not fired until after the final
buzzer sounded.
