Curro's Career Day Paces BU Victory
from press release
BOSTON -- Led by a career-high six goals from
senior All-American McKinley Curro in her final regular-season game
at Nickerson Field, the Boston University lacrosse team rolled to a
19-8 win over Vermont in America East action on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (9-7, 5-0 AE) scored the first five goals and never
looked back to win their 28th straight game against conference
opponents as senior Xan Weitzel matched the BU single-game record
with seven assists.
Seniors Traci Landy and Jenny Taft also netted hat tricks for the
Terriers. Senior Rachel Klein made eight saves in goal before
freshman Kim Elsworth took over for the final 20 minutes and
stopped a career-high three shots.
Vermont (4-10, 1-4 AE) was paced by four points (3g, 1a) from
junior Megan MacDonald. Three netminders split time for the
Catamounts, with sophomore Laura Barber making Vermont's only save
of the game.
Weitzel set up Landy for the first goal of the game, giving BU a
lead it never relinquished 29 seconds after the opening draw. Taft
converted on a free-position shot and Landy added another before
Curro scored her first two goals of the game to put the Terriers up
5-0 with 24:44 left in the first half.
Two Vermont goals before halftime cut the Terriers' lead to 13-6 at
the break, but BU opened the second half with six unanswered goals.
Weitzel's seventh assist came on Curro's sixth goal that put the
Terriers up, 17-6, with 19:31 left in the game. Weitzel became the
fourth Terrier to rack up seven assists in a game, a feat
previously accomplished by Kelly Trahon in 2002, Mary Beth Miller
in 2006 and Erica Baumgartner in 2008.
Despite the lopsided score, the Terriers held only a slim led in
several statistical categories, with a 15-14 edge in ground balls
and a 25-20 advantage in shots. The Terriers controlled 18 of 29
draws.
The game marked the final regular-season home game for BU's eight
graduating seniors. Curro, Caitlin Defliese, Klein, Landy, Jenny
Martin, Taft, Caitlin Webb and Weitzel were honored with their
families on the field before the game.
BU's win sets up a showdown between the two teams undefeated in
America East play in the regular-season finale next Saturday in
Albany, N.Y. BU, five-time defending America East champions, will
visit Albany on May 1 at 4 p.m. with the regular-season title and
the right to host the America East Championship on the line.
