Lyons, Flowers, Corliss Headline A-10 Honors

NEWPORT NEWS Va. -- Massachusetts junior Jackie
Lyons has been named the Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse Offensive
Player of the Year in voting conducted by the Conference's head
coaches. Richmond sophomore Mary Flowers was tabbed Midfielder of
the Year and La Salle sophomore Megan Corliss earned the Defensive
Player of the Year honor.
In the same vote La Salle's Lauren McDermott was selected Rookie of
the Year and Candance Taglianetti of La Salle was named Coach of
the Year. Additionally, Explorer senior Jill Davis was named
Student-Athlete of the Year in voting by the Conference's Sports
Information Directors.
Lyons, the first UMass women's lacrosse standout to be named
Offensive Player of the Year, enters this week's A-10 Championship
(Apr. 23-25) leading the Minutewomen with 38 goals and 16 assists
for 54 points. The Rocky Point, N.Y., native led the A-10 in both
goals (24) and points (35) in conference play. Lyons has registered
12 multi-point games, including seven in A-10 action, while scoring
four-plus points in five league contests.
Flowers garners the league's third-ever Midfielder of the Year
award and the second overall for the Spiders. She has registered a
team-high 57 points on 48 goals and nine assists. The Virginia
Beach, Va., resident was named A-10 Player of the Week on Apr. 19
after leading the Spiders to their fourth regular season title in
five years. She is one of the most versatile players in the
Conference as she leads the league in caused turnovers per game
(1.94) and ranks second in both ground balls (3.41) and draw
controls (3.18).
Corliss, a goalkeeper from Bluebell, Pa., earns La Salle's first
Defensive Player of the Year citation after leading the A-10 with a
.477 save percentage and an impressive 9.57 goals against average -
ranking her among the Top 25 nationally in both categories. Corliss
has started all 15 games between the pipes for the Explorers this
season while recording 135 saves, 11 ground balls and one caused
turnover.
Joining Lyons, Flowers and Corliss on the All-Conference first-team
are Duquesne's Meghan Frederick; George Washington's Kelsey
Honeyford; La Salle's Jill Davis; Merritt Cosgrove and Riley Perry
of Massachusetts; Richmond's Bria Eulitt; Molly Hastrich and
Christine Hanley of St. Bonaventure; and Temple's Tracy Zimmer.
The All-Conference second-team consists of Duquesne's Katie Rekart
and Sara Beckstead; George Washington's Sarah Phillips and Laura
Dominiak; La Salle's Lauren McDermott and Dorothy Schalleur; Dayna
Defliese of Massachusetts; Richmond's Gabi Wiegand and Alexis
Brennan; Liz Fox and Grace Dinn of Saint Joseph's; and Temple's
Chelsea Rosiek.
McDermott enjoyed an outstanding rookie season for La Salle,
leading the Explorers to their first-ever A-10 Championship
appearance. The two-time Rookie of the Week has started every game
for the Explorers in the midfield and boasts 39 points on 34 goals
and five assists. McDermott leads the team with 30 draw controls
and is second in goals scored. Additionally, she finished the
regular season ranked second among Conference rookies in goals and
10th overall.
McDermott is joined on the All-Rookie team by Duquesne's Aubrey
Green, Casey Denk and Riley Schamburg; George Washington's Nicole
Lacey and Abby Sneeringer; La Salle's Melanie Sarcinello; Jordan
Renna of Massachusetts; Richmond's Gabi Wiegand and Kara Moschetti;
and Temple's Stephany Parcell and Charlotte Swavola.
Davis garners Student-Athlete of the Year honors and her
second-straight Academic All-Conference nod. The senior attacker
from Folsom, Pa., enters this weekend's A-10 Championship as La
Salle's leading scorer with 53 points on team-bests of 39 goals and
14 assists. She ranks fourth in the Conference in points per game
(3.53) and sixth in goals per game. Davis, a first-team
All-Conference selection, maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point
average as an Elementary Education/Special Education major.
Joining Davis on the Academic All-Conference team are Duquesne's
Kat McNish and Janna Faulkner; George Washington's Liz Hoffman and
Sarah Phillips; Merritt Cosgrove and Riley Perry of Massachusetts;
St. Bonventure's Catie Greene and Molly Hastrich; and Temple's
Chelsea Rosiek, Missy Schweitzer and Ann Stouffer.
In her second season, Taglianetti has guided La Salle to its best
season in program history, including the squad's first-ever
appearance in the A-10 Championship. The Explorers have equaled the
program record for overall wins (nine), while establishing a new
mark for single-season A-10 victories (five). Taglianetti holds a
Master's degree in Sport and Recreation Management from Kent State
University, and a bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University
in Communication.
