No. 7 Dartmouth Keeps Ivy Title Hopes Alive

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The #7 Dartmouth women's
lacrosse team used a 7-1 run spanning both halves to put away
Harvard this afternoon, 11-9.
The win moved Dartmouth to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the Ivy League,
keeping its Ivy title hopes alive should Penn (5-0) lose one of its
remaining two games.
Senior goalie Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made five saves in a
big second half effort while sophomore Sarah Parks (Ellicott City,
Md.) had a four-point effort (three goals, one assist) to pace the
offense.
As usual, Dartmouth scored the first goal of the game when Dana
Brisbane (Locust Valley, N.Y.) took a feed from Courtney Bennett
(Darien, Conn.) behind the cage to score point blank at 28:25.
Harvard tied it up quickly with a goal from Danielle Tetreault and
took a 2-1 lead at 25:02 off a Nina Kucharczyk free position.
The teams traded goals starting with a nice move by Hilary Smith
(Bronxville, N.Y.) to dodge her defender and score low, tying it at
23:18. Harvard's Melanie Baskind won the ensuing draw and went
straight to goal taking the lead back before Parks tied it up with
a sick wide angle shot at 19:39.
The Crimson rallied to go on a 2-0 run, building a 5-3 lead at
10:39 after a Micaela Cyr bounce shot.
Dartmouth took a timeout to regroup and it worked, going on a tear
of four unanswered goals in a five minute span to take a 7-5 lead
with 2:43 to play. Sophomore Kirsten Goldberg (Cockeysville, Md.)
started things off with a great play, picking up the ground ball
off her own saved shot and rifling one past Martino at 7:56. Sarah
Plumb (Wellesley, Mass.) tied it up just over a minute later when
she shook off her defender and scored at a wicked angle.
Goldberg struck again at 5:40 when she converted a free position
shot and Parks put Dartmouth up 7-5 at 2:43 with a nice low dodge
to beat her defender and Martino. Harvard managed to pull within
one at halftime when Micaela Cyr was granted a free position on a
questionable call to make it 7-6 with 15 seconds to play.
Wadland opened the second half with a big save and it started a
huge 3-0 rally for Dartmouth. Hana Bowers (Old Greenwich, Conn.)
got things going with a free position goal at 28:10 and just a
minute later, Goldberg found Parks in front of the cage, who made
it 9-6 at 27:03. Wadland kept the Crimson off the board with a nice
save on a free position, leading to a breakaway by rookie defender
Kelsey Johnson (Hingham, Mass.). Johnson fed the ball to Greta
Meyer (Denver, Colo.), who took a fearless shot for a 10-6 lead at
24:50.
Wadland kept the rally going with another free position save on
Harvard's next possession, but the Crimson would not be held down
long. Harvard responded with a 3-0 run of its own, starting with a
goal by Tetreault, who then assisted Jennifer VanderMeulen on the
next goal to make it 10-8 with 14:19 to play. The Crimson defense
forced multiple Dartmouth turnovers in front of the goal and
eventually pulled within one, down 10-9 after a Baskind score with
7:30 to play.
Dartmouth got some key late possessions, and after milking the
clock, was able to score the insurance goal when Parks found Bowers
in front of the cage. Bowers dodged her defender and put one away
to make it 11-9 with 2:40 to play. The Big Green won the ensuing
draw control and ran out the clock for the win.
Dartmouth continues its road swing this Sunday with a trip to
archrival Princeton.
